“Worst Case Scenario is the best thriller I’ve read so far this year. It’s a chilling idea with great characters and near-perfect execution.” -James Patterson
When a pilot suffers a heart attack at 35,000 feet, a commercial airliner filled with passengers crashes into a nuclear power plant in the small town of Waketa, Minnesota, which becomes ground zero for a catastrophic national crisis with global implications.
#1 internationally bestselling author T.J. Newman is back with Worst Case Scenario, following her explosive debut thriller Falling and its harrowing follow-up Drowning.
“Worst Case Scenario is the best thriller I’ve read so far this year. A jetliner crashes in the worst possible location – and I mean the worst – the site of a nuclear plant. It’s a chilling idea with great characters and near-perfect execution. T. J. Newman is the kind of gifted storyteller that comes along every 5 to 10 years. Don’t miss Worst Case Scenario.” -James Patterson
The International Nuclear Event Scale tracks nuclear disasters. It has seven levels. Level 7 is a Major Accident, with only two on record: Fukushima and Chernobyl. There has never been a Level 8. Until now.
In this heart-stopping thriller, ordinary people—power plant employees, firefighters, teachers, families, neighbors, and friends— are thrust into an extraordinary situation as they face the ultimate test of their lives. It will take the combined courage, ingenuity, and determination of a brave few to save not only their community and loved ones, but the fate of humanity at large.

I was so excited for this book to come out. I binge read it over a couple of days. It’s emotional, intense and exciting

My most anticipated book of 2024 lived up to the hype! If this isn’t my favorite book of the year, it will be in the top three.
Mid-flight, a pilot has a widow maker heart attack while his second in command is in the bathroom, and the plane goes down. That would be terrifying enough, right? It gets worse – the plane crashes into a Minnesota nuclear power plant.
Worst Case Scenario tells the story of Waketa, Minnesota, and the lengths one person will go to in order to save others. Unlike Falling and Drowning, this story focuses less on the actual plane crash and more on the aftermath and the personal stories of survival for all the characters involved and how everyone is connected. It was both heart breaking and heart warming – I cried through the last 10% of the book, and it only takes one tear for me to give a book five stars!
TJ Newman has such visceral writing. I can’t think of any other author that makes me feel so many things in the span of 400 pages. She is truly masterful at what she does with words.
All of the trigger warnings and then probably some more – except no animals were harmed!

The writing is crisp, clear and tight. The story hits you like, well a plane crash; you see it coming and it happens so fast you didn’t realize how affected you were until after. I opened the book and then I was finished. I stayed up until well past my bedtime to finish it in one sitting. And at a certain point I realized that TJ mad made me care more about these people than I realized. She jerked more emotion out of me in those hours I spent read than in the past decade. And one particular cliffhanger will have you yelling “eff you” like Randy from Scream 2. I expected this to be my favorite thriller of the year and it 100% lived up to it. I don’t what what magic T.J. Newman has found but I hope that she continues to share it with us for as long as possible. Thank you for this book and for hitting three homers back to back!

Drowning was my favourite book of 2023 so the moment I saw the announcement of Worst Case Scenario, it shot straight to the top of my list of most anticipated releases of 2024. And I loved it! Of course I loved it.
I find it so intriguing that almost on the surface level, this seems like it could have a lot of similarities with Drowning – a plane crash leading to a group of people all working together for survival. But the storylines could not be more different, and both are incredible and fascinating and I love that. This was so different than anything I’ve ever read and I truly could not put it down. I ate dinner reading this. I took my kindle on a walk. I couldn’t look away and that’s such a fun feeling, when a book hooks you in like that.
~Technically~ this probably was closer to a 4.5 than a full 5 for me because I didn’t really love the storyline with Dani. I liked her and I liked the way that storyline and those characters tied into everything else – this book really was so great at having everything connect to each other in really smart ways. But I was just so into everything that was happening at Clover Hill and everyone there that I just could not get enough of that. So when some of the ‘side stories’ were focused on instead, while I do think they were important to the storyline and I did like them, I was eager to get back to the ‘main’ story.
I feel like I need to write a paragraph just for the characters. Jose is my favourite character I’ve read about in a long time. I adored Steve. And Ethan! I liked George more and more every time he was mentioned. And Dawson?! I need that man to be real and on the presidential ballot for 2024, please. I was obsessed with him right through to the end.
Anyway. Buy this. Or borrow it from the library. Either way, just make sure you read it, because I cannot recommend it enough. Maybe make sure you have a tissue nearby. But TJ Newman is absolutely an auto-buy author for me, and I can’t wait to see what more she comes out with in the future.

What an emotional rollercoaster!!! This was an action packed story and my emotions were all over the place. An airplane crashes into a nuclear power plant and now the small town of Waketa is faced with the fallout of the crash.
With each chapter we get to hear about different characters and how they have to handle the situation they are in and some of the stories are heartbreaking.
What I loved about this book is how it grabbed my interest from the beginning and kept me wanting to read more. I adored all of the characters and wanted to find out what happened with them.
I would love to see this made into a movie. It would be a guaranteed hit! I read T.J. Newman’s other two books and loved them and this one was absolutely perfect!!!!

Having devoured both Falling and Drowning, I couldn’t wait for the release of Worst Case Scenario. Just the thought—a commercial airline crashing into a nuclear power plant—is enough to generate nightmare images. I knew in the hands of a skilled writer like Newman, this would be a book I couldn’t put down. I was hooked from page one.
While the crash happens quickly, the disaster to the plant and consequences to the small rural town of Waketa, Minnesota¬—effectively cut off from the rest of the world—had me furiously swiping through pages on my Kindle. This is an adrenalin-fueled read, but the heart of the story is composed of excellent characters who lodge in your heart. We learn the backgrounds of each, become immersed in their lives and witness everything each stands to lose.
I’m old enough to recall TMI. I lived in the evacuation zone and remember the uncertainty and chaos. While the disaster in this book is fictional, it stirred memories of what might have been. I cheered the characters, mourned with them, and cried more than once. As with Newman’s other books, this has blockbuster movie written all over it.

A very very creative book—but got a little confusing in the middle. Really worth reading—which is why it got 4 stars
