Drawn in by the stunning florals on Sushma Hegde’s Instagram @SushHegde, I embarked on my watercolor journey with “Wildflower Watercolor: The Beginner’s Guide to Painting Beautiful Florals.” As someone completely new, this book quickly gave me confidence that I can learn with ease.

Sushma’s expert guidance is evident throughout. The book is incredibly beginner-friendly, with clear explanations, step-by-step instructions, and helpful visuals. Each project gradually builds upon the previous one, allowing you to master fundamental techniques like color mixing and brushstrokes before tackling more complex compositions.

The variety of wildflowers featured is delightful, offering something for everyone, whether you’re drawn to delicate forget-me-nots or bold poppies. More importantly, Sushma encourages experimentation and personal expression, making the learning process engaging and enjoyable.

If you’re a budding artist seeking a gentle and inspiring introduction to watercolor wildflowers, I recommend this book. It’s a treasure trove of practical guidance, stunning visuals, and the encouragement to let your creativity bloom!

I love Sushma’s artwork and was excited to order her book. I’m a professional artist and have painted wildflowers in the field for years. Sushma obviously put a lot of effort into this book. The photos of her art are inspirational and the tutorials are simple but well written, which is great.

Although I think the tips and tutorials on painting all of the individual flowers are nice, if you understand basic flower shapes etc and take a moment to study whichever flower you’re painting, these tutorials really become redundant. Again, I’ve painted for a long time and don’t need tips on color mixing etc.

What I struggle with is taking the single flowers that I love to paint and compiling them with others into bouquets and/or lovely group compositions, something that Sushma excels at. I finally found this information on the last pages of the book. There are 6 tips and one short tutorial on bouquet and group compositions. Shoot. I really want and need more on this one topic, and unfortunately this book doesn’t deliver.

If you’re a beginner or intermediate to watercolor and flower painting, I highly recommend this book. If you’re an old hat at it, you’ll still find plenty of visual inspiration in these pages, but that’s easily found elsewhere for free – like go outside lol. If you need help with the same subject as I do, I’d probably skip this one and hope that Sushma comes out with Wildflower Watercolor II where she tackles this topic. Sushma, if you’re reading this and write a book on creating flower compositions, I’ll be the first to buy it!

I have literally never painted anything successfully before, and this step by step guide is so great! Walks you through exactly what you get and how to do things. I’m very happy with the result!

Having made greetings cards for over 20 years, I suddenly decided to try my hand at watercolour painting for a change. Being a newcomer I was at a loss to know what to do. After watching a few tutorials on my IPad, I suddenly came upon someone recommending the “Wildflower Watercolour “ book by Shushma Hegde. It is a pure delight . I have copied so many of the samples from it and have learnt a great deal of hints and tips. For anyone , like me , who has just started painting (aged 82)! I thoroughly recommend it, It is well worth the money and excellent value. Buy it……..

Sometimes you don’t even realize how truly helpful an “instructional” book is until you find yourself going back to it time and time again when you start to feel lost…that’s this book for me. I’m not a professional…im not an artist (I just spend like I am lol) but I’m obsessed with watercoloring. I bought more than my fair share of books on the subject here and I just got through painting some flowers and I just thought “wow, I love this book so much. I need to review it “. I may have already but this is really good. It’s not full of a ton of intro stuff (seriously, I don’t need another book showing me how to do a color wheel lol). This is so specific in each stage of the painting from brush size and color mix to strokes but that’s just because she’s thorough however she absolutely encourages you to choose for yourself. I especially like the flowers chosen …it’s not just more roses and tulips (love all that but it’s not exactly hard to find) etc. This is wildflowers and herbs….besides lavender and poppies, these are not your “usuals”. This is just great and I’m grateful.

    This is beautifully illustrated.
The lessons are well laid out.
I like that they show what to use for brushes. The color and dilution are given to help you achieve the proper color balance. I have previewed the book. Now I look forward to painting one lesson at a time this summer.

I had bought another book for painting flower in watercolor by another popular youtube artiste and that book made me so frustrated and angry as the instructions were not clear and it felt like the author never ever painted thise painting herself .
Finding this book by Sushma Hegde after that tragic experience was like finding deep healing. I am short of words to write appreciation for this book and the author. The instructions given in each folower practice are very clear and pictures associated show step by step progress of the painting. Every flower also has an associated composition with other flowers. This book truly captures the essence of wild flower. Its my everyday goto for watercolor practice. Love love it !

This book is very well illustrate, tells you exactly which colors to use, which brushes & lays the painting process out very clearly. Once you have practiced a bit, you can apply what you’ve learned to other flowers…a must have!
