Detailed description:

A woman’s future is determined by fate and choice in a gripping WWII novel about danger, triumph, and second chances by the New York Times bestselling author of The Venice Sketchbook and The Tuscan Child.

London, 1940. Bombs fall and Josie Banks’s world crumbles around her. Her overbearing husband, Stan, is unreachable, called to service. Her home, a ruin of rubble and ash. Josie’s beloved tearoom boss has been killed, and Josie herself is injured, with nothing left and nowhere to go.

Evacuated to the English countryside, Josie ends up at the estate of the aristocratic Miss Harcourt, a reluctant host to the survivors of the Blitz. Awed as she is by the magnificent landscape, Josie sees opportunity. Josie convinces Miss Harcourt to let her open a humble tea shop, seeing it as a chance for everyone to begin again. When Josie meets Mike Johnson, a handsome Canadian pilot stationed at a neighboring bomber base, a growing intimacy brings her an inner peace she’s never felt before. Then Stan returns from the war.

Now a threat looms larger than anyone imagined. And a dangerous secret is about to upend Josie’s life again. Her newfound courage will be put to the test if she is to emerge, like a survivor, triumphant.

Wow, what a fab story! Loved this so much I couldn’t put it down. It flows very well making it an easy book to read. Gave it to my mum to read afterwards and she loved it just as much.

  2. A lover of books

Rhys Bowen is a wonderful author. Have enjoyed every book of hers that I’ve read. Devoured this one, couldn’t put it down. Liked the setting in WWII, the characters, and the details of life during that time.

The author has encapsulated the essence of world war in day-to-day life.. giving a glimpse of that period.
Usually when one reads of the WW books, it’s more heavy on either political affairs or the war itself. This book was a breather to get to know what common people went through, the sentiments and emotions were well portrayed.
‘Where the sky begins’, was a refreshing read. Loved the way how the characters grow and take shape in the story. Every character makes you to believe you know them. The narrative is simple and you can almost imagine living in that period. The protagonist was shown very practical, there are moments where she has conflicting thoughts , some of them that one can easily relate.
Over all a very fine book. When you are looking at a simple yet refreshing read … I usually seek comfort with Rhys Bowen books

A touching story with loveable characters. Inspiring and touching with moments of humour as well. Lots of unexpected twists and feel good moments. Expertly written as always the case with this author

Gradevole, personaggi ben delineati. Ambientazione molto interessante per chiunque abbia letto qualcosa sul’inghilterra durante la guerra. Niente di troppo serio, molto gradevole

Where the Sky Begins by Rhys Bowen was our real-life book club pick for June. Everyone gave it a 4 (even missing members) except one person who gave it a 3 because the ENTIRE PLOT OF THE BOOK IS IN THE SUMMARY! The rest of us either had read it too long ago to remember or hadn’t read it at all, so it didn’t affect us. But it is true, the whole story from beginning to end is spelled out there before your eyes. Needless to say, I don’t recommend reading the summary unless you read it now and read the book six months from now.

There are so many WW2 reads out there, and this one was different in that it was somehow kind of cheerful. Absolutely terrible things happen but main character Josie Banks is so resilient and chipper, making friends and a difference wherever she goes. It was the least painful WWII book I have ever read. It is perhaps more about someone living the most “regular” type of life during this horrific time. There is a bit of a mystery and that made it more interesting. There is a slight romance but I didn’t feel any bond grow between the two, so I wouldn’t go for this book if you want a romance. The ending was FAST- tied up very quickly.

Narrator Emma Griffiths was incredible. The accents she had to manage in this book- London, cockney, country (which the author wrote was a different accent), Russian, Canadian, German- she is impressive! I wonder if her cheerful voice is what gave this book its tone. I’m curious if those that read the book in their head felt it was as relatively upbeat as I did.

Well written with such clarity and well researched. I’m definitely going to be following this author can’t wait to see what Bowen comes up with next

  9. Heyo

This author has a wonderful knowledge of the Second World War. I truly enjoy the story line. And of course, a wee bit of romance!!

While I enjoyed the quiet, slow-pace of the story and the characters developing nicely, I couldn’t quite grasp where the story was heading. There were dramatic moments and a lot going on, so it should have felt fast-paced and exciting but it didn’t. I felt like I was waiting on some big moment that would add some kind of “punch” to it or a big “oh no” moment. Everything seemed very quiet including the drama, trauma, etc. Perhaps, though, Ms. Bowen was going for a feeling of what it was like in a small, wartime village in England where everyone was resolved to get on with life despite the hardships, fears, losses, and worries, but it just didn’t have the oomph for five stars for me, and it ended a bit quickly and conveniently.

I had figured things out way before the ending and I agree with a reviewer who wrote that it seemed the story needed a real focus, but again perhaps Josie Banks and her growth toward independence WAS the plot and everything else happening was geared to her development. All in all, this was a lovely, quiet read.

I will recommend this book to all my reading friends. This was so good.
When you start getting to the end, it’s very hard to put down. This was really a great story, without sex or crime. Loved it.

This book had me captivated from the first page. Set in England during WW2 it explores the experiences of a woman whose life has never been easy and is getting worse by the day. Rhys Bowen has such a gift for bringing her characters to life. I thoroughly enjoyed the story and the array of characters you meet through the pages. It is based on community, resilience, kindness and hope. I will keep this book forever and will definitely read it again someday to relive the beautiful story. Like rewatching a favorite movie.

Rys. Bowen does such wonderful historical fiction. Wish I could get more on kindle unlimited. Poor woman from a poor part of London with a terribly macho husband, surviving the bombings in London with a husband off to war. Her struggles to make a life with many obstacles in her way. Story was very intense.
