“Lapena is a master of manipulation.” —USA Today

The new unputdownable novel from the “queen of the one-sit read,” and New York Times bestselling author of The Couple Next Door

Nothing ever happens in sleepy little Fairhill, Vermont. But this morning that will change. And one innocent question could be deadly. What have you done?

The teenagers get their kicks telling ghost stories in the old graveyard. The parents trust their kids will arrive home safe from school. Everyone knows everyone. Curtains rarely twitch. Front doors are left unlocked.

But Diana Brewer isn’t lying safely in her bed where she belongs. Instead she lies in a hayfield, circled by vultures, discovered by a local farmer.

How quickly a girl becomes a ghost. How quickly a town of friendly, familiar faces becomes a town of suspects, a place of fear and paranoia.

Someone in Fairhill did this. Everyone wants answers.

  1. Gagan

I love the author but was a little disappointed with her last book but this one though a little obvious to me as I read too much mystery novels was a good one.

I’ve read almost all of Shari Lapena’s book and I agree that this is her best. It pretended to be a twisty whodunnit, but it was really a platform to illustrate so many things:
    – lying liars who lie
    – using users who use people
    – those who enable liars and users, and their motivations for doing so
    – things we want to believe and how we get ourselves to believe them
    – repentance and responsibility
    – “good people” who toe the line and become enablers

The only reason this is 4.5 stars instead of 5 is that the ending felt out of nowhere to me. She shored it up a little bit but it felt like one character’s development took a random left turn into, “What?” I can’t say more without spoilers.

The social commentary alone makes this well worth the read, and I don’t love the ending but I can accept it. Fair warning, I do have a young daughter and the mom’s grief was, gosh, so incredibly well-written that I wondered if Ms. Lapena was pulling from recent experience. I’ll be here to pre-order her next book!

A quick read. I did have it figured out by the halfway point (thank you, Lifetime movies) but no one is as innocent as they seem in this small town. There are a lot of point of views and can get confusing at times.

Diana was a 17 year old senior who was found murdered in a farmer’s field. Now the police and town have to find out who the killer is. Everyone is hiding something.

Shari Lapena is one of my favorite authors and her latest book is her best yet. I was immediately engaged in a story that both puzzled and got my attention. So many nuances, so many interesting characters and written in her tight style. One of the best mysteries i have read. Perhaps the best.

Mehhhh… The story was fast paced and entertaining enough to read all the way through, but it reminded me of a wannabe rip-off of The Lovely Bones – fully equipped with the ghost narrative and not nearly as good. I appreciated the short chapters, and the book isn’t filled with a lot of extra fluff, keeping it relatively short and to the point. There were a lot of characters to try to keep track of which was a bit of a challenge, but it was still pretty easy to figure out who the culprit was. The ending felt a bit rushed to me as well. ‘Ok this is who the murderer was… and that’s the end, goodbye.’ Easy to read in a short period of time, but also easily forgettable. Again I say, mehhhh.

Another well written book from Shari Lapena a great who dunnit leaving you wondering who it was!
I did have an idea right at the start as to who the killer was and i did guess right but that doesnt come out till the end.
3 suspects in the frame for the lifeless body of young Diana found dumped in a farmers field. The ghost of Diana wanting to remember who did this to her while stuck between worlds and a lot of hidden secrets to come out.
    Excellent read

  8. Amazon Customer

A great read by a wonderful author who keeps you guessing.
Absolutely love Shari Lapena. Fantastic writer who brings the characters to life and the stories are excellent!!
I could not put this book down until I finished it.

  9. Laurie ‘The Baking Bookworm’

Shari Lapena is back with another fast-paced, twisty and unputdownable domestic thriller!

When Diana Brewer, a popular and well-liked local teen, is found brutally murdered in a farmer’s field on the edge of her small, idyllic Vermont town, the townspeople are shocked. Fear, paranoia and suspicion grow in this spine-chilling story about small-town secrets and deception.

Through the first-person perspectives of several people in Diana’s life (including Diana’s own POV in the afterlife), readers learn more about Diana, her friends, family and neighbours – many of whom have secrets and will become suspects in the murder. These pivots between the characters kept the tension high and me solidly glued to the pages as I guessed and second-guessed the culprit.

There is also a poignancy to the story as we witness the impact of Diana’s death on those who loved her and Diana’s struggle to remember what happened to her. I appreciated how Lapena, through Diana’s perspective, highlights the societal and personal pressure women feel to acquiesce and defer. How we are raised to believe the good in others and follow what men and media say over our own ‘gut feelings’ and intuition (that’s some excellent book club discussion right there, folks!).
“How many ways, I think can a girl be assaulted? I never got to live my life. I never got to live to be old enough, to be unattractive enough to be left alone. To finally just be.”
This thought-provoking and tension-filled whodunnit will have readers guessing what happened to the popular teenager, who is telling the truth and who will do whatever it takes to keep their secrets hidden. What Have You Done? is an addictive thriller that readers will devour in a sitting or two and reinforces why Shari Lapena continues to be an auto-buy author for me.

Received the book as estimated. I haven’t read it all yet, but the first few pages are interesting.

Someone in Fairhill did this. Everyone wants answers.

    My Thoughts:

As we follow the events of small town life in What Have You Done?, we are soon caught up in numerous possibilities. Who killed teenage Diana Brewer? Was it her controlling boyfriend, her gym teacher, or someone else entirely?

Just when we think we have it figured out, an unexpected killer is thrust upon us at the last moment.

Meanwhile, the story is told through alternating narrators, a couple of whom were anonymous…until we discover the person behind the voice. A compelling story that earned 5 stars.

Great book. Did seen to last at times that’s why I didn’t give it a 4 star. I did enjoy the book, small town and the characters and the mystery of a young girl that was killed and how it had you guessing!

  13. dragon

I have to admit, I’m a fan. And Lapena didn’t disappoint me this time either.
So there’s a small town. And there’s a girl. She’s dead. But the story, as always is, who might have done it.
The boyfriend? The teacher? Friends? Townspeople? The thing about this novel is that there are indeed a lot of characters. Despite that, I didn’t find them complicated or confusing. They were easy to keep track of, and truth be told, my main suspect did indeed turn out to be guilty, despite all the possibilities sifting through the story. Nevertheless, the ending was still a surprise. One thing I particularly liked was that if all these characters had been in a Stephen King novel they would’ve ended up killing each other by chapter 9. Here they interact, and express suspicion and anger, and fear and revulsion. And I found them very real and convincing, just like The Couple Next Door, and Everyone Here is Lying, and Not a Happy Family. If you’re a fan, don’t miss this one.
