From the USA Today bestselling author of When We Believed in Mermaids comes an emotional novel about two women facing the betrayals, heartbreaks, and refuge of true friendship.
Phoebe and Suze used to be closer than sisters. Growing up in a quiet and wildly beautiful coastal town in Oregon, they shared everything. Until the secrets they couldn’t share threatened their bond and complicated their lives.
Now, decades later, Suze, a famous actress desperate for safe haven following a brutal attack, is back in town. Phoebe, a successful illustrator and fabric designer, has discovered keeping a secret means she can’t let anyone get close, aside from her beloved granddaughter, Jasmine. As Jasmine’s move to London looms, Phoebe doesn’t know how to face the return of her old friend and all that’s still unsaid between them. Can the two women who’ve never confronted their past do it now when the choice is between healing and survival?
Heartfelt and layered, The Starfish Sisters is a moving story about the complicated nature of female friendship, the joys and heartbreaks of life, and the resiliency and power that women possess.

Overall, this was a tale about two friends that felt true to life. They faced true hardships, had fights and misunderstandings but the friendship is the element that stays constant through the story. As it was written in first person, I found that disorientating at first. However, each of your main characters soon take on a distinct personality and “voice” that the back and forth sections flow easily together to give the reader a look at events from both sides.
As the story went on, there was a desire to turn the next page to know what happens next. That being said, I could only give it 4 stars because I felt the resolution was underwhelming. I would have like to see more of a discussion between the two main characters as they spoke at the end. I also felt that the reconciliation and apology was very one-sided – that the author actually wants the reader to feel that the problems in the friendship lie with one character. Yes, Phoebe’s transgressions might have the most high cost impact, but Suze was not guilt-free. Frankly, I wouldn’t have gone back to see her the way she acted at the unwed mother home either.
That being said, I do feel that it is a satisfying ending with letting the readers know where all the characters end up. I would definitely recommend it and who knows, you might not even agree with me on the ending.

TW: serious physical and emotional abuse of a child, stalking, violent attack , adoption
This story follows Pheobe and Suze. It dissects their life long friendship, moving between dual POV and scenes from when they were both younger to present day.
Both in their 50s ( I’m guessing ? ) Pheobe and Suze are brought back together after a traumatic event , leaves Suze shaken to her core.
Both women have tested their decades of friendship to the max in varying ways.
Both took different paths, kept secrets, felt jealous of one another throughout the story and this was portrayed in such a heartfelt, emotional way.
I really felt for Suze. Her father was a different level of nasty. Please check triggers here with this story line. Despite all her hardships she really made a life for herself.
I understood Phoebe’s different emotions towards Suze over their lives, likewise with Suze towards Phoebe.
This is a multilayered story with friendship, betrayal, secrets , love and loss. Get the tissues at the ready. Its a tearjerker .

This book was SO GOOD! I had not read this author for a while and having read-discovered her I want to read everything she’s written including what I read years ago.
So incredibly beautifully written. Characters were so real because of this author’s ability to make them come alive. Some of the story is just heartbreaking and she makes you want to reach in and give the characters a good hug. Her descriptions of the scenery used such beautiful words and made it come alive for the reader.

The Starfish Sisters by Barbara O’Neal is a book I read because it was my book club’s selection for this month. I enjoyed the story, but didn’t think about the book when I wasn’t reading and wasn’t fully invested, it seemed a bit slow for me. I will say though that if the entire book was as good as the end, I would have been riveted throughout. The ending was incredibly beautiful and touching.

I have read several Barbara O’Neal books and this one did not disappoint.
Once again she ‘gets’ people – our joys and our pain and our faults and our repeated mistakes and our pride.
She also allows the chance to find ourselves and grow ourselves and to learn to forgive.
This story is fresh, set along the Pacific Ocean with all of its beauty.
Ms. O’Neal offers us the chance to enjoy the natural world we live in and to see two friends share forty years of life and tears and true friendship together.
Thank you!

The depiction of friendship is so real.
The different seasons of friendship through all the stages of life.
I just felt that the attacker could have been different someone from her past who could finally be put behind bars. It would have set Suze free.

Ms. O’Neal has again provided us with a marvelous story. Going through the lives of these girls and their beloved Grandmother is so inspiring. We are shown that love, understanding and forgiveness is what is truly important in life.

At the end of the day, this is really just a double romance of just over middle-aged women. It is not what I consider Women’s Literature. It’s an okay story; not so sappy that I couldn’t finish it, about two long-time friends (not actual sisters- those are rock formations). Thankfully, the bedroom scenes weren’t too graphic, otherwise I would not have finished it.

I really enjoyed the way you write. It was compelling and I hung on every word. It made me cry at times.
