I highly recommend “The Silent Patient” to anyone looking for a page-turning thriller that will keep them guessing until the very end, I am personally a big fan of psychological trillers. The story is both suspenseful and thought-provoking.

I think the book was OK had I feel like if I was not a mental health therapist, I probably would’ve liked the book better. I was almost positive for the first half of the book that it was set in the 60s to 80s purely due to the hard-on that the narrator/author has with Freud and the psychoanalytical orientation that comes with him (as well as the major ethical and legal violations written in the book—very 80’s mental health vibe). I know that the the author states that he had some training in mental health as well as his own personal experiences with therapy in his book questions and I guess I just worry that this book is not a great example of what therapy can be however as a detective novel and a thriller, I think it was good. The surprises were overall unique and I think it was a fun book to read. I just probably wouldn’t recommend it to any of my friends that are also in the field.

It is difficult to review this book without inadvertently revealing too much. I can usually see a startling plot twist or a surprising character disclosure on the far horizon, but the stunner plot twist genuinely shocked me. It was original and inventive, but disturbing. The reader embarks on a journey with the book. A psychological thriller that is equal parts detective story. It begin with an earnest forensic psychotherapist, who is hired to treat a mute patient at a facility, who hasn’t spoken since she shot and killed her husband several years ago. Theo is determined to be the one to reach Alicia, who was once a famous painter. He theorizes that if he can renew her desire to paint, perhaps he can break her silence and heal the trauma that’s impeding her voice. This is the crux of the tale. Why did Alicia murder her spouse and why won’t she speak? The reader is lulled into believing that the story will lead down a particular path, and then, suddenly, the narrative becomes something else entirely. I was disappointed that I’d been fooled by the misdirection, but this was cleverly done by Michaelides. Several red herrings were introduced by the author, making many characters into potential culprits, capable of misdeeds. I enjoyed the psychological aspects of the book, and found the discussions regarding early childhood development and trauma exposure to be compelling. This is a dark and atmospheric tale, in which art and weather figure prominently. Actions and motivations are as mercurial as the humid heat, the respite of falling snow or an angry, careless brushstroke. The book concludes abruptly, and is left open-ended, which is decidedly frustrating, given the powerful reveal that was the point of the entire endeavor. Michaelides mentions his wish to revisit Theo’s character again in the future, so perhaps more will be forthcoming. The story is already provocative. The ambiguous, unfinished ending just invites more intrigue, speculation and individual interpretation. This is a chilling mystery and a worthy debut.

I’m pretty picky about books but this book is amazing and keeps you interested. I love that it’s well written and twisty. I’ve read the second book in the series now too and it’s just as good. Definitely recommend!!

I cant believe this od the first book of Alex as writer. He plotted it fantastic and cluless ahead. I am his fan now and already order his another book before finishing this one. The story is just superb. You won’t get bored from 1st page till last. Must read..

This was a fantastic story. Well developed characters, easy to visualize, plot keeps you interested throughout. I can’t put my finger on what I didn’t enjoy about this, maybe the writing style? While reading I had the hardest time keeping the timeline straight, that became more clear at the end but it just nagged at me the whole time. Would have loved more content from Kathy, she felt like plot fodder – just enough to keep it moving forward. Which is wild because she’s imperative to the actual plot line. I also don’t enjoy it when an entire story blossoms for it to wrap up so violently fast. Would make an excellent installment to a show like “why women kill” with more emphasis on Alicia and a lot less Theo. Don’t regret reading it but won’t be re-reading.

This spellbound book had me hooked within the first page. Things are never as they seem, but you forget that in the reading of the author’s beautiful writing. When you do get to the conclusion you realize you got fooled along with every character in the book. It was mind blowing amazing! I can’t recommend this mysterious book enough!
