Detailed description:

An instant New York Times, USA Today and Indie Bestseller!

#1 New York Times-bestselling phenomenon Patrick Rothfuss returns to the wildly popular Kingkiller Chronicle universe with a stunning reimagining of “The Lightning Tree.” Expanded to twice its previous length and lavishly illustrated by Nate Taylor, this touching stand-alone story is sure to please new readers and veteran Rothfuss fans alike.

Bast knows how to bargain. The give-and-take of a negotiation is as familiar to him as the in-and-out of breathing; to watch him trade is to watch an artist at work. But even a master’s brush can slip. When he accepts a gift, taking something for nothing, Bast’s whole world is knocked askew, for he knows how to bargain—but not how to owe.

From dawn to midnight over the course of a single day, follow the Kingkiller Chronicle’s most charming fae as he schemes and sneaks, dancing into trouble and back out again with uncanny grace.

The Narrow Road Between Desires is Bast’s story. In it he traces the old ways of making and breaking, following his heart even when doing so goes against his better judgement.

After all, what good is caution if it keeps him from danger and delight?

This novella, focusing on the character from the Kingkiller Chronicle universe called Bast, was a nice addition to the set. I enjoyed it greatly. Every book, novella, and short story the author writes further expands the universe and leaves me wanting more. I hope Patrick Rothfuss will finish the series and release the third book in the trilogy. Fingers crossed.

From the beautifully painful stab of memories of me reading Pat.Rothfuss on my youth. This book is a perfect reminder of a slice of Temerant and the amazing world he built with his first books. My heart aches for finishing the tragedy of Kvothe, and for me to be able to close a chapter of my life that has been left open sinceI finished A wise man’s fear.

As always: Beautifully written, and beautiful story.

  3. Newbury Lady

I liked this tale about Bast. I have read ‘The Name of The Wind’ and the ‘Wise Man’s Fear’ – twice – and will likely read those and this novella again. IMO, Patrick just plain tells a great story that entices you in and there you stay until you’re done. I read at my home office desk so I can look up words he uses that I don’t know. And yes, like thousands of others, I am waiting for ‘The Doors of Stone’ but certainly not with bated breath…

  4. James Leth

I wouldn’t have minded if it were twice as long, but it’s complete enough. The man knows how to craft a tale, and he can turn a phrase that makes you stop for the pleasure of reading it over again.

Things are not always what they seem.
Now we know what Bast does in his spare time in the town of Newarre. He hangs out in the Lightning Tree, waiting for the village children to come with their questions and problems, each hoping he will help them. Bast does so, but his help always comes with a price. He might be cunning, deceptive, and a trickster, but he has a good side.
The Narrow Road between Desires is a thirst quencher for fans longing to return to the world of Patrick Rothfuss’s Kingkiller Chronicles. It might be a rewrite of The Lightning Tree, which appeared in the Rogues anthology in 2014, but this is an expanded version—way better than the original.
Rothfuss takes us back in his immersive world of the Newarre, with his complex characters and layered narratives that pluck at our heartstrings and let us escape reality. He solidified this when Bast’s warm personality came to light when he helped a young boy deal with his abusive father.
The Narrow Road Between Desires discusses themes ranging from children’s light-hearted innocence, such as escaping their parents’ punishment or having a pet, to the dark themes of dealing with domestic violence. The narrative told through children’s experiences made it more compelling and believable.
The book comes highly recommended for newcomers to the series looking for a standalone fantasy novella. However, if you’re eagerly awaiting more about Bast, anticipating a new adventure with Kvothe, or already familiar with “The Lightning Tree,” you may want to pass. Yet, if you crave a heartwarming tale that intrigues and keeps you guessing, this is definitely worth a read.

Of all Fantasy I’ve read, and I’ve read a lot, Pat’s books are my favourite. His use of words is an art. His Fantasy is gentle, colourful, fun, intriguing, uplifting, serious…. I could continue for pages.
    Thank you for these gems.
    Hoping for more.

  7. RLP

A novella focused on Bast, the mysterious character who serves at “Kote’s” bar. Beautifully written in a way that leads the reader full circle in the small town atmosphere where magic and superstition seem to enrich everything.

My only complaint is that it was all over too quickly. Fantastic.

  8. Meredith Scheff

I’m a massive KKC fan, but I will try to write this review on the merits of this book alone and not as someone walking the patient road between books.
It was..ok. Rothfuss can still paint pictures and metaphors better than most any fantasy writer. His lyrical style is one of my favorite aspects of his writing, and while definitely present, does feel a little less..impactful, I suppose, in such a short and generally meaningless story.
We follow Bast through his day, but don’t get a good idea of when in the general KKC timeline we are. He cavorts and connives, and does no small amount of fraternizing- and though it all happens all off-screen, it does seem to take up a lot of space for such a short book. I suppose that’s Bast’s character, but without the leveling presence of other adult characters it seems quite heavy handed.
In his other novella, Slow Regard of Silent Things, we got a beautiful look into the mind of a troubled but brilliant young woman. It was written so as to put ourself in her mind, and while that also didn’t have any impact on the greater KKC story, it *did* bring us intimacy with a mysterious character. We don’t get that here, we only follow Bast as he..does stuff. Some good stuff, some emotional stuff, some sexy stuff. But I never felt (much) _closer_ to him as a character, which was what *my* desire was.

  10. Carlos Sola

Großartig, wie eigentlich alles, was P.atrick Rothfuss zu Ende bringt. Schade, dass es so wenig ist, aber dafür ist die Qualität herausragend.

  11. Amazon Customer

For real though…I enjoyed this, but holy bad acting Batman is it short. And where’s book 3?!?!?!? It’s like GnR Chinese Democracy at this point, we will all get a free Dr. Pepper if it ever comes out 😢 . It didn’t satisfy the urge at all. Like chewing Nicorette, now I just want the real thing more.

  12. Amazon Customer

Like always captivating and imaginative. One of my favorite authors
