In development as a major motion picture

Molly Gray is not like everyone else. She struggles with social skills and misreads the intentions of others. Her gran used to interpret the world for her, codifying it into simple rules that Molly could live by.

Since Gran died a few months ago, twenty-five-year-old Molly has been navigating life’s complexities all by herself. No matter—she throws herself with gusto into her work as a hotel maid. Her unique character, along with her obsessive love of cleaning and proper etiquette, make her an ideal fit for the job. She delights in donning her crisp uniform each morning, stocking her cart with miniature soaps and bottles, and returning guest rooms at the Regency Grand Hotel to a state of perfection.

But Molly’s orderly life is upended the day she enters the suite of the infamous and wealthy Charles Black, only to find it in a state of disarray and Mr. Black himself dead in his bed. Before she knows what’s happening, Molly’s unusual demeanor has the police targeting her as their lead suspect. She quickly finds herself caught in a web of deception, one she has no idea how to untangle. Fortunately for Molly, friends she never knew she had unite with her in a search for clues to what really happened to Mr. Black—but will they be able to find the real killer before it’s too late?

A Clue-like, locked-room mystery and a heartwarming journey of the spirit, The Maid explores what it means to be the same as everyone else and yet entirely different—and reveals that all mysteries can be solved through connection to the human heart.

10 reviews for The Maid: A Novel (Molly the Maid Book 1)

  1. Katelyn Collison

Throughout “The Maid,” I felt like half the time I wanted to throw my phone with its Kindle app across the room. How could Molly be so… daft? I mean, withholding information during police questioning, protecting people who didn’t deserve it (though in at least one case, probably did)? I get that the author’s intent was to have her lead character be different – possibly neurodivergent – but, yeesh!

Also, based on their speech patterns and mannerisms, are Molly and her Gran meant to be British ex-pats living in the US? (They wouldn’t call Dancing With the Stars by that name, but by its British one, Strictly Come Dancing.) And, don’t get me started with Juan Manuel…

However, despite these faults, I found “The Maid” to be a quick and easy read with a couple of twists I didn’t see coming. Definitely worth the time to check out, and I think I can see myself reading Book 2 sometime.

  2. Stephen B. Franco

This is a great story from a unique perspective. Molly has her own way of looking at the world, largely influenced by her grandmother bringing her up. Her no-nonsense approach to hard work, honesty and taking pride in her job is refreshing in today’s climate of people being satisfied with just doing the minimum. In contrast to today’s society of professional victimhood, Molly never complains, takes care of herself and triumphs in the face of adversity. I have the advantage of reading the first and second books as I write this review, and I can say without reservation these two books are some of the best books I have read this year.

When my sister chose Nita Prose’s The Maid to read for our book club, I thought it was Maid, the novel that became a gritty TV series. Naturally, I was relieved to find out that it wasn’t that book. But once I started turning the pages of Prose’s debut not-quite-whodunit, my concern returned.

Twenty-five-year-old Molly Gray is a maid at a fancy hotel. But she isn’t a clock puncher eager to trade her Pledge for party clothes after her shift. Cleaning is Molly’s life. She takes unparalleled joy in “returning rooms to a state of perfection” and maintains a rigorous home housework schedule in the tenement she shares with her grandmother. Molly and her grandmother are best friends. Actually, Gran is Molly’s only friend. Her wisdom, often dispensed as aphorisms, helps Molly navigate the daily challenge of social situations as well as the sometimes not-so-nice (i.e. cruel) colleagues and guests she encounters.

So it isn’t easy being Molly. And it gets more difficult when she finds a dead body while cleaning the penthouse. What happens next tests everything Molly knows — and doesn’t know — about how people work. Their characters, their motivations, and their shockingly common tendency to bend the truth. Watching her forge through the forest that is this puzzle is painful, memories of her grandmother and other past moments mingling to reveal the extent of her struggles.

Prose’s story isn’t so much about solving a murder mystery, or even the mystery of Molly herself. It’s about understanding — and ultimately respecting — people who are different. Because as Gran herself often says, “We’re all the same in different ways.” By placing Molly in a dangerous situation, Prose magnifies her otherness, rousing our sympathies. But she also shows us that Molly has the rare kind of courage that just might save the day.

Poignant and human and sometimes hard to read, The Maid is a metaphor for life’s messes. In the end, I was glad we read it for book club.

If only as a little reminder that we’re each equipped with our own kind of mop.

  4. Chris Trites

  5. Anzelika Meyer

Keeps you going right to the end, the characters are interesting, the plot fresh and the ending surprising! Great Read!

  6. Mônica de Mattos Silva

I liked a lot the integrity Molly: from the tragic childhood to her vocabulary, from her mindset to her preferences in food and clothes. A well-shaped and unusual character.
As for the story, I liked that it’s realistic and all the characters are kind of “people around the corner” – you can meet them in real life.
In general it’s a dynamic and very pleasant read

  7. MrsLeif

A wonderful character with a perfect plot!

I can’t believe that someone would read this book without enjoying it. I did the audio for some chapters and the narrator did an amazing job as Molly!

Molly Gray is a young woman working as a maid in a hotel. Molly is quite different from another 25 year old. She has a hard time understanding certain expressions, situations, sarcasm, and evil. When her grandmother was alive, she helped her navigate the world. Grandmother created a safe routine for Molly. She is the one who got her a job at The Grand Regency Hotel and the one who took care of her until she became ill.

After her passing, Molly felt lost but working is one of the things she loves the most. She is always on time, proud of her crisp clean uniform, and enjoys having her trolley full of supplies. Molly is OCD about her cleaning and she makes sure all the rooms she takes care of are left pristine, back to a state of perfection.

Molly starts becoming friendly with Mrs. Black. She and her husband stay in one of the suites regularly. Molly doesn’t like Mr. Black. She believes he is a bad egg but the last thing she was expecting was to find him dead on his bed. After passing out, she comes back to herself and calls her boss to let him know about Mr. Black’s death. The police are called in and soon they believe Molly is involved. Clue after clue is pointing to Molly but she knows she is not responsible for his death. Friends she thought she had begun turning on her and if she doesn’t get help soon, she will lose more than her job, she will lose her freedom.

I adore Molly. She was an amazing woman. She had respect for others. She was smart and resourceful in her own special way. She had pride in her work and she was ready to help her friends.

I can’t wait to see this book turned into a movie.

    Cliffhanger: No

    5/5 Fangs

Very good reading. When you think you found the vilan, you are taken to another character. At the same time, a light reading.

  9. Crafty Consumer

I’m starting this review with just a large exhale, haha. This was a rough read for me. Though this is a work of fiction and meant to be more heartwarming or a romp than an actual murder mystery – it was still difficult for me to connect with this on any level. Most of the book felt much more like watching a train wreck because I couldn’t stop reading (even when I was physically cringing and yelling at the main character.) The last act of this book was what saved it for me. The characters and plot came together well, and the ending was very endearing.

Overall, I’m rounding up my review to 3 stars. Authors put so much work, effort, time, and heart into their books and I don’t want to discredit that. This book just wasn’t for me.

  10. Richard R Dodge

Overall this was a fun read. I thought the main character was a bit unbelievable, but perhaps that what made it engaging…she doesn’t respond to events like most people would. Though I gave it 4 stars, my daughter and my mother would probably give it 5 stars.
