First, the shipping and condition of the book at arrival. I’m pleased enough. It was mailed with other items I ordered in a box, which leads me to believe that luck played a part in keeping my book in good condition.
The book came shrinkwrapped, with thankfully no damage at all. The dust jacket is like a thinner cardstock, does not feel durable at all. It’s literally like a piece of paper…not too happy with that. It has a matte finish too, so you’re not going to be able to do any spot cleaning like you would with a glossy or coated paper.
They also decided to include maps…one in at the front cover and the other at the back cover. It’s a nice thought, but the execution falls flat. The first map an earlier sketch of the world, and the second being the finalized one you’ve come to know. However, they aren’t attached to the book. It’s just a piece of folded paper slipped in there.
The contents of the book; obviously there’s the LOTR story. It also includes illustrations/sketches Tolkien made as he was writing the book. It looks like there are 32 of these. It included the massive appendix that wasn’t included in many of the publications due to cost.
I don’t regret my purchase, I just think that it’s lacking in quality in several points. But, the content is why I bought the book. I love the inclusion of Tolkiens illustrations and the appendix, plus the note about the illustrations that goes on for several pages.
I bought this as a Father’s Day gift for my husband’s first Father’s Day, thinking he will read them to our child and hopefully get them into Tolkien and the fantasy genre also.

O livro é esteticamente bem detalhado. O material é de boa qualidade. As folhas são um pouco finas, o que pede um cuidado especial no manuseio, porém isso é compreensível pela grossura do livro. 10/10 vale muito a pena.

Although the size of the book is very large since all of the books are condensed into one book, the artwork is pretty cool. The book is not as cumbersome as you would think, it is possible to read it as is. But the illustrations are really neat, its a really great addition to any book collection for a LOTR fan or just someone who likes to collect/read special editions of books.

I got this on sale for $30+ and it was the best deal on Amazon I’ve seen. Every page I turn and all over the book there is so much detail. I greatly enjoy reading this for the first time having all this information that I normally wouldn’t have. If it’s on sale don’t even question your purchase just buy it.

Hand made illustrations complement the story. Delving much deeper in depth than the films, (which are among some of my favorites). Gilded elvish adorns the cover, spine and adds a wonderful flourish.

This new edition of the three books (Silm. Hobbit, and LOTR) is of an amazing quality. The physical paper, the illustrations, the color scheme used. This is how a publishing house should treat its readers.

If you’re a Tolkien fan, as I am, this is the definitive Lord of the Rings compendium to have! The bicolor text is absolutely beautiful, with chapter titles printed in a vibrant crimson. The book includes a glossy, printed map of Middle Earth in red and black ink folded into the front of the book, and original sketches throughout the text by J.R.R. Tolkien himself. The cover is beautifully minimalistic, only showing the glowing eye of Sauron, which the dust jacket is designed to showcase via a strategically positioned hole. The dust jacket itself is perfectly designed to highlight the gold and red leafing on the page edges.
When on sale, this is an unbeatable deal. If you love the Tolkien Legendarium, don’t hesitate; just buy this book!

Good quality binding, paper, and printing. Dust jacket is quality as well. Included loose maps are sweet. Perfect for a LOTR fan. Worth the price, even better on sale.
