Detailed description:

THE INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

From the author of Survive the Night and Final Girls comes a tense and twisty thriller about a summer camp that’s impossible to forget—no matter how hard you try.

Two Truths and a Lie. Vivian, Natalie, Allison, and Emma played it all the time in their cabin at Camp Nightingale. But the games ended the night Emma sleepily watched the others sneak out into the darkness. The last she—or anyone—saw of the teenagers was Vivian closing the cabin door behind her, hushing Emma with a finger pressed to her lips….

Fifteen years later, Emma is a rising star in the New York art scene, turning her past into paintings—massive canvases filled with dark leaves and gnarled branches over ghostly shapes in white dresses. When the paintings catch the attention of the wealthy owner of Camp Nightingale, she implores Emma to come back to the newly reopened camp as a painting instructor.

Despite her guilt and anxiety—or maybe because of them—Emma agrees to revisit her past. Nightingale looks the same as it did all those years ago, haunted by a midnight-dark lake and familiar faces. Emma is even assigned to the same cabin she slept in as a teenager, although the security camera pointed at her door is a disturbing new addition.

As cryptic clues about the camp’s origins begin to surface, Emma attempts to find out what really happened to her friends. But her closure could come at a deadly price.

S Y N O P S I S // Two truths and a lie, it’s a game Vivian, Natalie, Allison and Emma played all the time at Camp Nightingale. Then one night Vivian, Natalie and Allison go missing – Emma being the last to see them as she woke to see the three sneaking out of their cabin late one night. Years later, Emma is a rising artist turning her haunting past into paintings – canvases filled with dark branches that cover ghostly shapes in white dresses. When the camp owner, Francesca catches wind of the paintings she recruits Emma to return to Camp Nightingale as an art instructor. Once there Emma is assigned to the same cabin she slept in with the missing girls, but now things are different – there’s only one security camera and it’s pointing straight at Emma’s cabin door. After finding cryptic clues left by Vivian, Emma dives deep into her haunting past while she tries to sort through lies of the past and threats in the present. Is finally obtaining closure going to come at a deadly price?

R E V I E W // This was my first Riley Sager book which instantly made him and auto buy author for me. I was hooked from the start. This story weaves so perfectly through the past and present depicting the setting, the characters and the mystery so perfectly that I could not put it down. I really felt I was able to connect with each of the characters! Every single time I thought I had it figured out Riley Sager threw in an incredible twist that left me not only shocked but at a loss for words. Seriously…. there are so many twists! The ending was one I couldn’t have predicted even in my wildest imagination! It absolutely blew me away. I cannot express how crazy wild the ending was!!! This book was truly flawless, it is hands down, my favorite by Riley Sager but also one of my favorite books that I am always recommending.

This book highlights the effects of trauma and lies. Emma goes to an all girls camp as a young teen and befriends three older girls she rooms with at the dogwood cabin. The three girls disappear never to be found and Emma must sort through the events and her guilt. In addition, others at the camp are also affected by the incident and everyone blames each other. She returns as a camp counselor as an adult and attempts to solve the mystery and put the ghosts to rest. Great twist at the end!

What a fantastic book. I loved every page. And the end was too good! I was never completely sure what the final outcome would be!

I found this book slow to start for me, I think that was more a personal thing rather than the book itself. I did have a bit of a book hangover from Riley’s other book “Lock Every Door”. So it took me a few days to get through the first 45%, but as soon as I hit they 45% mark I flew through the book and read the rest of the book in a few hours. Couldn’t put it down, I had no idea where the book was going. I didn’t figure out any of the twists, which is unusual for me. The eeriness, and atmospheric writing was on a whole other level. Such a great read! Another 5 star read from Riley Sager for me!

Well done. Nicely written. Surprise ending was great. Story a bit far fetched in regards to lake midnight folklore but I guess there are many camp mythical tales in the real world too so maybe not as surreal as once thought. Think about all them camping stories passed down from generation to generation in any local mountain town. This is only one part of the story woven here. Many other plots happening at once.

Ultimately it is fiction writing and Riley sager is known to write from a Paranormal / spiritual perspective in majority of his books.

It’s a gr8 escape from ur typical crime mystery. I enjoyed it. I liked this book much better than his newest release from 2023. I often find the older releases are better but that’s just me. Overall you won’t guess the ending. I guarantee that.

One of the best books I’ve read recently, enjoy all Riley Sager books but this one was just so vivid in my mind, took me a bit to get into it but then it was hard to put down!

This was my first read by Riley Sager. I didn’t care for the first half as it did read very slow and *very* descriptive. Everything was overly described and extremely wordy for this portion of the story. I also wouldn’t say it’s a thriller at all, but more of a mystery. I did want to know what happened to the three young girls which is what kept me reading. Also, this was a neat surprise at the end, though not mind- blowing. However, the story it took to get there was not the most entertaining. I didn’t root for any of the characters, and none of them really had any personal growth. Quite honestly I found them all a bit insufferable. The overall details are a bit silly and far fetched, while also not realistic whatsoever. Everything became repetitive and I found myself skipping paragraphs at a time because I knew what they would say- like Franny and her ancestry. I don’t think the whole history part really worked in favor of this story. I really had higher hopes as it was a creative idea, it just didn’t pan out at all how I had hoped. In the end, I found the book very anticlimactic and predictable.

Ein sehr gutes Buch, welches meiner Mutter viel Freude bereitet hat. Es soll spannend sein und gut geschrieben worden sein, was man sich eben von einem guten Buch erhofft!

Such a deliciously crafted whodunit…Savoured it from beginning to end. Having read a gazillion books in this genre I find the pattern of many contemporary whodunits predictable. But this book subverted my expectations nd beguiled me till the very end. Highly recommended!
