The Great Jazz Age Novel _______ The 1925 Original Version, with Classroom History _______
The Great Gatsby is considered F. Scott Fitzgerald’s magnum opus, exploring themes of decadence, idealism, social stigmas, patriarchal norms, and the deleterious effects of unencumbered wealth in capitalistic society, set against the backdrop of the Jazz Age and the Roaring Twenties. At its heart, it’s a cautionary tale, a revealing look into the darker side to the American Dream.
“When I came back from the East last autumn I felt that I wanted the world to be in uniform and at a sort of moral attention forever; I wanted no more riotous excursions with privileged glimpses into the human heart. Only Gatsby, the man who gives his name to this book, was exempt from my reaction—Gatsby who represented everything for which I have an unaffected scorn. If personality is an unbroken series of successful gestures, then there was something gorgeous about him, some heightened sensitivity to the promises of life, as if he were related to one of those intricate machines that register earthquakes ten thousand miles away. This responsiveness had nothing to do with that flabby impressionability which is dignified under the name of the “creative temperament”—it was an extraordinary gift for hope, a romantic readiness such as I have never found in any other person and which it is not likely I shall ever find again. No—Gatsby turned out all right at the end; it is what preyed on Gatsby, what foul dust floated in the wake of his dreams that temporarily closed out my interest in the abortive sorrows and short-winded elations of men…”

Weird cheap looking version of this book. it appears like the cover is a color photo copy. Odd format and size. Not at all worth the price.

A lot of negative reviews about the print being off center or too small. The print IS small but the copy I received had zero print issues. Easy to knock out in 1-3 hours (depending on your reading speed). Intriguing characters. Although it uses a lot of “old timey” dialogue, it was still easy for me to understand. Had to look up the meaning of a FEW words, but altogether, very digestible & entertaining. And you can’t beat the price ! Less than a single Starbucks coffee.

It is a testament to just how good the book is that it is as fresh today as when it was written 100 years ago. Readers who love the recent film will be amazed just how much of the story, and even script, is lifted straight from the book; a sign of a true classic.

As far as the book itself I do not understand why it is an American classic. not that great

It’s hard for me to express my thoughts on this book. The writing had great moments for me but at times left me lost and confused. I didn’t care for the dialogue or most of the characters. Gatsby and Nick were my favorites but even then my emotional connection to them was minimal. There were some suspenseful moments but not really a major page turner for me. The scenes with Gatsby and Daisy were moving and so was the ending. In the end though, I’ve read greater books.

The author puts lots of detail into an era gone by, however the content, though not want you might want to believe, still reigns true today.

This is a great novel that I needed to get my son for school. It’s a classic story and the quality of the book is very well-made.
