Detailed description:

The most powerful woman in American political history tells the story of her transformation from housewife to House Speaker—how she became a master legislator, a key partner to presidents, and the most visible leader of the Trump resistance.

When, at age forty-six, Nancy Pelosi, mother of five, asked her youngest daughter if she should run for Congress, Alexandra Pelosi answered: “Mother, get a life!” And so Nancy did, and what a life it has been.

In The Art of Power, Pelosi describes for the first time what it takes to make history—not only as the first woman to ascend to the most powerful legislative role in our nation, but to pass laws that would save lives and livelihoods, from the emergency rescue of the economy in 2008 to transforming health care. She describes the perseverance, persuasion, and respect for her members that it took to succeed, but also the joy of seeing America change for the better. Among the best-prepared and hardest working Speakers in history, Pelosi worked to find common ground, or stand her ground, with presidents from Bush to Biden. She also shares moving moments with soldiers sent to the front lines, women who inspired her, and human rights activists who fought by her side.

Pelosi took positions that established her as a prophetic voice on the major moral issues of the day, warning early about the dangers of the Iraq War and of the Chinese government’s long record of misbehavior. This moral courage prepared her for the arrival of Trump, with whom she famously tangled, becoming a red-coated symbol of resistance to his destructive presidency. Here, she reveals how she went toe-to-toe with Trump, leading up to January 6, 2021, when he unleashed his post-election fury on the Congress. Pelosi gives us her personal account of that day: the assault not only on the symbol of our democracy but on the men and women who had come to serve the nation, never expecting to hide under desks or flee for their lives—and her determined efforts to get the National Guard to the Capitol. Nearly two years later, violence and fury would erupt inside Pelosi’s own home when an intruder, demanding to see the Speaker, viciously attacked her beloved husband, Paul. Here, Pelosi shares that horrifying day and the traumatic aftermath for her and her family.

The woman who has been lauded by her opposition as “the most powerful Speaker” ever shows us why she is not afraid of a good fight. The Art of Power is about the fighting spirit that has always animated her, and the historic legacy that spirit has produced.

I notice that all but one of the negative reviews are not verified purchases. Hmm. They also sound like they are from the same script.
Very interesting. No one else has walked in her shoes.

This is an important book. It gives a truthful and illuminating account of the most momentous and challenging events that our nation has faced in the past 25 years. It also provides insights into the daily workings of the House of Representatives. The author is a dedicated, intelligent and courageous statesman.

the book arrived with messed up pages…

This is a very good read, and she accurately puts her finger on many important world and USA issues and problems, of both today and yesteryear, and how they were created, as well as explains how things work and don’t work in the House, Senate and White House. There are many insider revelations of political processes, politicians and «We the Sheeple». Much is surprising, distressing, entertaining, and at times perhaps even satisfying for some to finally learn that our suspicions about certain issues and events were correct after all. Nancy is a heroine.

    Read it!

What a book! I thought I admired this woman before but now I even admire her more, if that’s possible. You can tell that this strong intelligent woman’s honest account of everything she’s experienced and endured has helped shaped our democracy. Do yourself a favor and read this wonderful book that I highly recommend.

I’ve always admired Nancy Pelosi and think she would have made a good president! I ordered this book as soon as it came out but have been disappointed.

Maybe it would have helped if the book had been in chronological order, but it just seemed to jump around so much that I lost a lot of interest. One minute there is a story when Trump is president and then the next page a story from when the first Bush is president.

Though it did have a few interesting stories, I can’t really recommend this title. Perhaps a skilled editor could have done a better job of getting the best stories out of Speaker Pelosi. (PS: I still think she is very talented!)

I now better understand some of the major accomplishments and losses to occur in American politics over the last couple of decades. An interesting read.

I am not an American but reading this book has given me great awareness of the battles lawmakers in the US have been dealing with politically for the past 30-40 years through the eyes of Nancy Pelosi. Many things that were never shared before. Nancy must be a force of nature to have done everything she talks about in the book all the while keeping her eyes on her purpose for entering politics in the first place – For the Children!
Worth the read – I learned a lot!!

Nancy Pelosi shares her views on leadership and enabling votes to better the lives of ordinary Americans. She covers the significant world and national issues that had to be dealt with during her decades in Washington. It’s compelling and sheds light on those in all categories of leadership in our government.

… for a very painful read. Yes, Speaker Pelosi is a brilliant and accomplished politician. But to finally hear the information contained in the de-classified documents detailing our government’s many tragic screw-ups, and the American officials that caused and are responsible for these debacles is positively heartbreaking. Lies, deceit, blind loyalty, arrogance, agendas, egos, idiocy, incompetence…the list is endless, leading to hundreds of thousands of deaths, billions needlessly spent, both here and abroad. And, as always, the pathetic post-occurrence legislation best characterized as: “so it won’t happen again” suggestions. Words on paper. And absolutely no one held responsible for any of it. It’s grotesque. But Speaker Pelosi puts it all out there. Fascinating, but difficult to read.
