“Sexy, sweet, wise, and nostalgic – Jane Austen’s Persuasion for our times.” — Gabrielle Zevin, New York Times bestselling author of Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow

“Deeply human, profoundly romantic. Rowell will break your heart and you’ll thank her for it.” — Leigh Bardugo

“I loved every page of Slow Dance, a book that is romantic to its core, and as funny and smart as its wonderful characters.” — Emma Straub

Back in high school, everybody thought Shiloh and Cary would end up together . . . everybody but Shiloh and Cary.

They were just friends.Best friends. Allies. They spent entire summers sitting on Shiloh’s porch steps, dreaming about the future. They were both going to get out of north Omaha—Shiloh would go to go to college and become an actress, and Cary would join the Navy. They promised each other that their friendship would never change.

Well, Shiloh did go to college, and Cary did join the Navy. And yet, somehow, everything changed.

Now Shiloh’s thirty-three, and it’s been fourteen years since she talked to Cary. She’s been married and divorced. She has two kids. And she’s back living in the same house she grew up in. Her life is nothing like she planned.

When she’s invited to an old friend’s wedding, all Shiloh can think about is whether Cary will be there—and whether she hopes he will be. Would Cary even want to talk to her? After everything?

The answer is yes. And yes. And yes.

Slow Dance is the story of two kids who fell in love before they knew enough about love to recognize it. Two friends who lost everything. Two adults who just feel lost.

It’s the story of Shiloh and Cary, who everyone thought would end up together, trying to find their way back to the start.

These two lovers are unusual for a modern love story in that they are not particularly attractive, and very old school in their morals. He is described as having small pouch eyes , lots of moles and a thin top lip. She was called “Sasquatch” in high school as she was taller, with broader shoulders and wider hips than most of the boys, and her bottom teeth were a wreck. And yet

I loved this book. I loved the very many “that sounds just like Rainbow Rowell” sentences. I loved the love story that was there all along, but just slowly revealing itself. I can’t say enough good things about this book. You simply must read it. You won’t be sorry; I promise.

I don’t why but it really bugged me that it took place in 2006. Seems so random, and it felt like reading a book that I’d shelved. I found both Shiloh and Cary to be insufferable. The story itself was sweet overall, and I love that they found a way back to one another (that’s not a spoiler as the blurb explains it). Even so, this didn’t feel like an epic love story. It was drawn out and at time frustrating. This one just wasn’t my favorite.

  4. Susan Newman

I say quick, because I could not put this book down. Loved these two. Even though they were frustrating at times. I had my fingers crossed that they would finally realize they belonged together. Other books by Rainbow that I have read that I liked were: Fan Girl, If the Fates Allow, and Landline. Thank you Rainbow!

What a well written book, so much so that I read it in a few days.. The author even fleshed out the personality of the children .. it was great highly recommend it!

Rainbow Rowell is a word goddess. No one writes dialogue, interior monologue, description, or relationships quite like her. Do yourself a favor and let this book sweep you away. And then, if you haven’t already, read all the others too. You won’t be disappointed.

  7. Nikki Lloyd

I’ve loved Rainbow Rowell’s books for a while now, but this book had me tearing up! It’s filled with will they won’t they moments that give you such anxiety.
There’s not a better book about coming back to the people you love and always will.

Straight after I read this, I wrote a really intense review. I somehow lost it before submitting and left it at that for three days. I can’t not review this, as probably my most favourite book of the year so far. This is going to be a watered-down version as I am not as emotional and sleep deprived as I was when I finished it

Shiloh’s behaviour and feelings struck chords with me, and her growth through the decades was subtle and massive together. She was so obviously the same teenage girl inside, but a grown mother to the world. I bet that’s most of us.
Her sensitivities and what read as close to a sensory processing disorder made all of her decisions absolutely track for her character.

Cary too. The reasons they were not together in high school or after it, I totally understood. Nothing that occurred to keep them apart seemed contrived at all. So realistic. The time frame, again smacks of human interactions. Most of us don’t fall in love and live happily ever after in a month or two weeks! Twenty years I guess is longer than average, but I have more than one friend who spent years with other people before finding their high school crush/sweetheart/love in later life.

Phew. I’m getting emotional again. I loved that both Shiloh and Cary had to deal with a heap of other lifey things as well as how they felt about each other.

It’s still fiction, and a happy ending at that, but Slow Dance took me on a lovely waltz that I didn’t want the music to end for. Congrats again Rainbow, you topped Fangirl (which I loved) for me with this

Best friends since before high school everyone thought it would be Shiloh and Cary forever. Except, neither Shiloh nor Cary knew how to bridge that gap in their relationship. What happens is many missed opportunities.

Now, they’re reunited at a friend’s wedding for the first time in nearly fifteen years. They have both lived full lives in the intervening years. Can they pick up what they put down so long ago, or has too much time passed between them?

I love Rainbow Rowell’s simplistic approach to writing about life and love. I say simple when in reality it’s anything but simple. I should more appropriately say she truly captures the nuances and complications of everyday life in the most relatable way.

I absolutely adored Cary and Shiloh and I was so pulled into their story. The book is laid out in that we get chapters in the present and chapters in the past. I liked that there’s such a dichotomy between Shiloh and Cary past and present that I didn’t need the “before” sub-headers to indicate when we were getting a glimpse of them in the past. I think this perfectly highlights how different they are, how much they’ve grown, as individuals in the intervening years, but also the subtle ways in which they’ve remained the same.

I will say that I had the most difficult time reconciling the past Shiloh from the present Shiloh. I just think this is because she’s had a much more substantial change with everything she’s gone through. Instead of becoming the actress she wanted to be Shiloh was married, now divorced, and is mother to two young children and back, again, living with her mother in the house she grew up in, and teaching children’s theater. Shiloh doesn’t want to be living with her mother, and I think she wishes some things had turned out differently with her life, but she cannot see a way to change any of that.

On the other side is Cary who, after graduation, joined the Navy and has been enlisted ever since only coming back to Omaha occasionally to look after his mother. I think it shows a sense of steadfastness. He had one trajectory for his life and he has stuck with it for the long haul. The only thing, or someone, who could have moved him from his course would be Shiloh.

They’ve each carefully circled around one another, not wanting to rock the boat, not wanting to risk losing their friendship. The will they/won’t they is pretty spot on as is their undeniable connection to one another.

I really liked how all the other characters surrounding Shiloh and Carey are rooting for them, it’s just Shiloh and Carey themselves that are the biggest obstacles.

I’m happy that Rainbow Rowell decided to return to an adult title this time around after having spent the last few years in the YA and YA Fantasy realm. I was first introduced to her writing through her first book Attachments and these types of books of hers have always held a special place for me. I can now honestly say that Slow Dance fits perfectly in there as well.
