  6. KT

Stunning photos and great coffee table book.

  7. Avery Commons

This is too small to be a coffee-table book. It is 21.5cm x 26.5 cm x 2.2cm (8.5 in x 10.5 in x 1 in), and considering it comes in a thick, matte-finished cover, it is not heavy, weighing 1.2 kg (2.6 lbs). This is also not a travel book, nor a photography book, so it is hard to say how this book ought to be catalogued. Its category defies a single word or line. Here’s what I would say about it.

It is a book of photo-essays written by not one, but 21 writer-photographer-travellers. Each person covers a specific location. The editor, Beales, covers several. For example, Reuben Wu covers The Pastoruri Glacier in Peru. The calm but striking night views are contrasted with the serene scenes taken in the day. Wu describes this seemingly remote place as ‘an extreme environment and wilderness area, but it is technically a small tourist destination, albeit one in severe economic and environmental decline’.

Thus, from Banf, Canada to Namibia, we are taken to places where we can expect the kind of beauty and challenges that the photographs show, and the writers tell. The only odd thing is that Australia is conspicuously not featured. But there is enough for one to want this book, if not for ideas, certainly for the joy of enjoying the beautiful pictures, and long for the idyllic places in our imagination – unless, of course, we are stung by them into action.

  9. Melanie

    It makes good bedtime reading

  10. Melanie

I got this book for my brother – it’s gently used but in amazing, like-new condition! The content is beautiful and I really enjoyed the commentary written about each location. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves to take a peek at the untouched places of the wilderness and little traveled to areas of the world. (And I’d recommend ordering from this vendor as a ‘gently used’ item is apparently still in pristine condition and a good gift for a loved one to enjoy.)

  11. Wendy Schroeder

Breathtaking photos and small exerpts on each page. Truly one of the most beautiful books I’ve ever seen/owned. Proudly displaying it on my coffee table and I pick it up often, it definitely isn’t a one and done

  12. Renata

    Absolutely the perfect gift
