“Grabs you on the first page and doesn’t let go until you reach the end.” —Laura Dave, New York Times bestselling author of The Last Thing He Told Me

A husband’s disappearance links two couples in this twisty thriller from the New York Times bestselling author of Local Woman Missing, Mary Kubica

Jake Hayes is missing. This much is certain. At first, his wife, Nina, thinks he is blowing off steam at a friend’s house after their heated fight the night before. But then a day goes by. Two days. Five. And Jake is still nowhere to be found.

Lily Scott, Nina’s friend and coworker, thinks she may have been the last to see Jake before he went missing. After Lily confesses everything to her husband, Christian, the two decide that nobody can find out what happened leading up to Jake’s disappearance, especially not Nina. But Nina is out there looking for her husband, and she won’t stop until the truth is discovered.

“Rich with detail and a mounting, almost suffocating sense of dread, Just the Nicest Couple is a dark and twisted exploration of loyalty, family, and how far we’ll go to protect the ones we love.” —Andrea Bartz, New York Times bestselling author of We Were Never Here

  1. angelofjade

Jake is missing, and his wife, Nina, is worried when, days later, he still isn’t answering her calls.
Did something bad happen to him, or is he just cooling off after their biggest fight yet?
Mary Kubica explores the secrets between two couples who are casual friends in this missing person mystery.
A good story with deep undertones leading up to the twist.

  2. Carmels girl

I wanted to be blown away by this book but unfortunately I found it very basic. It’s not bad but I’ve read better.

  3. T. Creevy

This is a fast paced story that keeps you guessing til the end. I really became engrossed in the world of Nina and Lucy and thought the characters were really well written. I was disappointed with the conclusion, I thought it was a bit rushed, but overall a really good read.

Everything this author writes is amazing ! All I wanted to do was sit and read it till I was finished – did not want to put it down.

  5. GG Padmashree

Not only did I keep reading until the wee hours, I gave the two hours I should have given to the laundry to finishing the book. But, it was worth it. The ending is more than surprising, it is shocking! The story is built around a chance meeting in a forest preserve by a woman and a man who are acquainted. The man frightens the woman to the point that she runs away not stopping until she is locked in her home. Her name is Lily and she teaches high school. The man is Jake and he is married to Nina, A teaching colleague of Lily. When Jake does not come home he is reported to the police as missing. Lily confesses to her husband, Christian, that she killed him–but, did she. With that the wacky story begins ad Nina confides in Lily. Christian tries to manipulate evidence. The police continue their search. Now, Lily did not confess the “murder” to Nina nor the police who have no body as they search for the missing Jake. The details will amaze you; however, you will be stunned at the conclusion. Yes, you must read this book.

I read this after reading Local Woman Missing by the same author. This book is similar in the way that there are a couple twists at the end and little pieced throughout the book that become connected at the end. Overable an enjoyable read, finished the book in one sitting

this one. As mysteries go it ranks up there very highly, so well plotted, I don’t care for the split stories though, told from two different perspectives, I know it’s highly popular but I’ve never liked it and won’t rate a book five stars with it. I really did enjoy this book though and will seek out others of hers.

That said, this was extremely well done, a mystery of the first caliber, keeping the reader guessing right up to the end, for once, I did not guess who the killer was. I didn’t like several of the protagonists, well, really none of them but for Nina who had been gaslighted her entire life including in her marriage. A professional victim in a way, but so many people who are gaslighted are their own worst enemies, as is Nina.

It’s not a character defect, just a weakness that I wish could be rooted out entirely on both sides, it’s horrible to do to someone and it’s horrible to be the victim of it. One wonders how could they NOT see what was happening? But blaming the victim isn’t something I can do either. And it is all the rage these days from politicians to preachers to every day people, a national epidemic, maybe world wide all things considered.

  11. Susan M. Baumann

Kubica certainly knows how to create nail-biting suspense and unrelenting dread. The story starts with a jolt of adrenaline. Lily confesses to her husband, Christian, that something terrible has happened. She was attacked in the park. Fearing for her life, she struck the man repeatedly with a large rock and was able to flee. In her panic, she drives home, instead of going to the police. Worse still, her attacker was their friend and respected neurosurgeon, Jake, husband to Nina, Lily’s colleague.
Meanwhile, Jake hasn’t come home. Nina’s worried because they’d had a particularly heated fight the night before and both said things that she wished they hadn’t. She figures that Jake just needs time to calm down. Days pass with no word. Nina thinks that maybe Jake has finally left her. They’ve been going through a rough patch in their relationship lately. Nina’s been caring for her ailing mother, and Jake feels neglected. When the hospital calls however, Nina’s alarm skyrockets because Jake loves his job and would never do anything to jeopardize it.
So where is he? Jake’s disappearance baffles Nina and terrifies Lily and Christian. Lily last saw him angry and bloodied at the forest preserve where he physically assaulted her, but she didn’t notify the authorities. Is Jake still out there now, full of vengeance and wrath or is it something much worse? A series of increasingly bad decisions follow, inexorably linking Jake, Lily, Christian and Nina in a twisted maze of deception and terror. Lily recoils at the thought of what might be true, and Nina pushes forward, intent on finding her husband.
Kubica has crafted an intricate and riveting tale. The constant momentum is impressive. I felt Lily and Christian’s palpable anxiety every time there was a knock at the door. I cringed when Christian’s behavior became even more reckless and impulsive, but understood his desire to protect his pregnant wife from the dangerous web she was entangled in.
This was a great book that I genuinely enjoyed.
It’s a propulsive read that’s pensive, too, and that is no small feat. While turning pages in a flurry, I found myself contemplating as well. The idea that one decision or traumatic event can set off a cacophony of life-altering choices is sobering. Each character thought they knew themselves and each other, but were shocked and surprised when unforeseen circumstances tested their resolve. Highly recommend the book. The ending is masterfully done.

  12. Ines Davis Parrish

This was an intriguing story with believable characters and alas, highly improbable circumstances in some instances. Nina the “victim” wife was very believable and likable in her array of emotions in dealing with a missing husband and dependent (and surprisingly not so dependent) mother. The interplay between her neighbor couple and herself was quite intriguing. The best thing was you never knew what was coming next.
Overall well done. (Except the endless details about the scenery, the home decor…)

  13. Meags

Through a variety of perspectives, the story of two couples and how their lives intertwine is told. Jake, the rich neurosurgeon husband of Nina, disappears. Nina’s friend Lily knows more about the disappearance than she is sharing…

The chapters were a big long for my liking. The backstory of the characters was organically included for the most part. The descriptiveness of characters, places, etc. was a bit extreme and in some places distracting. Lily’s husband Christian tells lots of things that are not relevant- as though we are reading his journal entries.

Overall, a good book. There was definitely a lot happening! I wish the ending had provided a bit more in what exactly happened- it fast forwards and leaves the reader inferring. I’d prefer to have everything wrapped up in a bow!
