“Sizzling, Witty, Passionate…Perfect!” —Eloisa James, New York Times bestselling author
Christi Caldwell, USA TODAY bestselling author of the Wicked Wallflowers series, combs London’s underground and finds romance and danger for a missing lord and the lady who loves him.
To solve a mystery that’s become the talk of the ton, no clues run too deep for willful reporter Verity Lovelace. Not even in the sewers of London. That’s precisely where she finds happily self-sufficient scavenger Malcom North, lost heir to the Earl of Maxwell. Now that Verity’s made him front-page news, what will he make of her?
Kidnapped as a child, with no memories of his well-heeled past, Malcom prefers the grimy spoils of the culverts to the gilded riches of society. Damn the feisty beauty who exposed the contented tosher to a parade of fortune-hunting matchmakers. How to keep them at bay? Verity must pretend to be his wife. She owes him.
The intimacy of this necessary arrangement—Verity and Malcom thrust together in close quarters—soon sparks an irresistible heat. But when the charade ends, the danger begins. Will love be enough to protect them from a treacherous plot devised to ruin them?

I gave this book 3 stars where mostly I give Christi Caldwell’s books at least a 4, and mostly 5 stars. For some reason I just couldn’t get in to this book. It seemed like a chore rather than fun, like it should be. Malcom and Verity were good characters but I just couldn’t get in to the story. I would put it down for awhile and then almost dread picking it back up again. I can’t really explain why.

What a lost heir to do once reinstituted to his right place when a woman is seeking out his secrets …
Oh my !!!
It was a pages-turner read, why I could not read it previously, I needed a free-day devoted to this story.
Just a few sentences in Percival’s story and my heart was bleeding for him and the childhood he had been robbed once he became Malcom North.
Malcom is no more the sensible heir of an earldom, he has become a ruthless and merciless king of the underworld. Surviving the gutters, he has been stripped of any innocence and kindness he might have left after the brutal upbringing he was given.
Despite his apparent coldness, he is not the icy blooded monster everyone appears to think he has become. In his own way, even if he keeps everyone at arm’s length, he shows concern for the weakest under his protection. Over the years, he has gleaned a bunch of broken souls and risk takers, and whatever he might told himself, they are his kin and from all those he has won their indefectible loyalty.
Verity, without having the same dark past than Malcom, was not cuddled in a classically portrayed family, she had been shunned for her mother’s sins, whose sin was to have loved and trusted the wrong man. A man who loved them too, but too weak to fully take care of them. Why at the young age of twelve she became her remaining family only support. From then, she worked her skin to elevate her circumstances, alas it is well known women were seen as not fit for intellectual labors. And even if she is not one to cover, proving women’s worth is a challenge. And it is not prepared for the worst of the city, she runs head held high in the sewer and whatever are her mistakes, she fights like a hellion.
Both have experienced a good life with confort or some until they find themselves with nothing left and must fend for themselves or sank down.
Now together, they need to find their right place, she the illegitimate daughter and a woman, striving for acceptance in a world made by men for men and he the Earl raised in the slums of the city, to seek his bearing among his peers
Their story is one of small trusts won one at a time, until these morph to a deeper sentiment. Yet, with the past looming over them and some shadowy figures still ready to pounce, will their burgeoning feelings be enough.
As I came to learn with Mrs Christi Caldwell’s work, she has it mapped out, her heroes have oft connection with previous works.
And here, she does not disappoint, while her heroes have not been seen previously, they are linked to an other couple.
You can perfectly read this first in a series as what it is a standalone story, yet as I have read Courting Poppy Tidemore, I confess I adored watching the couple of heroes finds its own epilogue.
And what a sweet epilogue with the best revenge ever.
I can only praise Mrs Christi Caldwell for her so very unique insight of the historical period, far from the ballrooms and closer to the real people. She is the bearer of amazing tales which feed the reader a kaleidoscope of emotions.
A 5 stars for this tale of approval and embracing one’s true identity.
A particular mention for the cover which reflects perfectly the story said atmosphere, and the characters’ descriptions.
I was granted an advance copy through Netgalley by the publisher Montlake Publishing. I also preordered my own.
Here is my true and unbiased opinion.

Sometimes you get a book, settle down to read and in a matter of moments you are transported to another time.A time when people lived and struggled to keep fed, warm, clean. Happy for small blessings.A tale of really of an earlier Suffragette. Though that word wasn’t known then. A tale of hardship,of hope, of love. A love that wouldn’t stop even with the protocols of that time. It was sad, its happy, it made you want a happy ending. Did it succeed? Read it and find out

Christi Caldwell continues to amaze me with how she has her characters connected yet never loses the ability to tell a good story. Her character development is top notch and doesn’t not leave much unresolved in her stories.
In this case, it is about Malcolm North AKA Percival Northrop, true Earl of Maxwell. It tells of his journey from discovering he is the lost earl to acceptance. Along the way, he goes through the steps of grief, which is fitting since he is losing the life he had known for 20 years. Denial that he is the earl, he doesn’t remember his early life due to the trauma of being kidnapped and his parents dying. Anger at being forced out of the life he has always known and into the life he doesn’t want. Bargaining by half managing his estate, letting the man of affairs do the work so he doesn’t have to think about it. Depression, the sadness that he can’t have the life always known to him. The life that saved his life and built his fortune. Finally acceptance that no matter how hard he fights, he is the Earl of Maxwell and there is nothing he can do about it. He finally steps into the role and becomes a more active participant in his own life and his estate.
Going along with him on this journey is Verity Lovelace. Her journey is one of fighting the way of life for women. She is the bastard of a scottish tavern girl and an earl. Her mother died in childbirth, forcing her to raise her younger sister. Her father treated her fairly but was limited to the rules of society. As a gift, he got her employment at a newspaper, where she worked her way up from cleaning maid to reporter. All she ever wanted was to be respected reporter, but society has certain roles a woman can fill and being a reporter is not one of them. In order to keep her employment, she is tasked with getting the true story of the Earl of Maxwell. In her pursuit of the story, she exposes him, forces him out of his comfy life and into the life of nobility.
As a whole, the story is a slow burn, the characters don’t fall into each others arms within the first 20% of the book. In fact, the romance was secondary story, the first was about healing. North healing from his past and Verity healing from the effects of her parents relationship.

A poignant story of love, learning to trust, forgiveness and family. In the depths of darkness (both physical and mental) Verity and Malcom find each other. Their relationship starts with distrust and their stormy encounters bring truth to light. I loved this story and have read it already a few times.

I loved the premise for this story – totally different than I expected with toshers and sewers. Characters are lovable too! And, the story even has some good messages that come through the story as well. I seriously can’t get over how much I love this narrator – he is just SO good! He brings the books to life in such a way that I feel like I’m watching a movie. His pauses, breaths, voices, etc. are fantastic! The writing style by the author is also great and he brings Christi’s words to life. I thoroughly enjoyed this book! It might be my favorite Christi Caldwell book this far.

The story grips you, tugs directly at your heart strings and pulls you deep into itself from the very beginning. I don’t think there will be any person who would not want to hug the little boy that Malcolm was and wipe his tears. It is so soulful, every word would make you feel so helpless…you would feel so scared about your own child. And then the story weaves so beautifully with Malcolm and Verity and all their insecurities, their defense that they put up…their struggles and their intense, sizzling chemistry!
And then we meet our beloved characters from earlier stories and they blend in so seamlessly with this story.
This is one of the best by Christi…a very unconventional hero, a strong heroine (which is her trademark), adorable side characters and a unique, gripping storyline makes it a must read for all romance lovers.

Wonderful, wonderful book. My eyes are still weeping, as I write this. As they have several times throughout, in sadness, in sorrow, and in delightful happiness. Two very strong characters are Malcom and Verity. Make this tale the best yet. !!

I have read a lot of historical romances and this one is so very different from them all. This one focuses not on the glamourous balls at Almacks but on the darker side of Regency London.
Lords and Ladies move about in their carriages and curricles on the streets of London and yet beneath them, in the maze of sewer tunnels, lives the underbelly of the population. It is in this violent and not to mention horrifically unsanitory place that the Earl of Maxwell has grown up.
Stolen at his parent’s deadthbed and robbed of his memories, the gutter is all Malcom has ever known and all he wishes for. Or so he thinks until the tenacious Ms. Lovelace crashes into the sewers and right into his life.
The two crash headfirst into each other. Sparks fly, tempers rise and an undeniable spark roars between them. This story is full of heartbreak, dangerous persuits and sizzling romance and offers a fresh perspective on the challenges in the Regency era.
