I feel like this book was written for someone like me—a mid-career woman doing a lot of pandemic reflection on my goals, values, and future. During the pandemic, I’ve had a lot of thoughts about my own career—some of those thoughts being pretty negative. Honestly, one of the most helpful things in this book for me is the stories and examples Dr. Flippin offers from her own career. It’s helpful to know that even someone like Dr. Flippin didn’t always feel like she had everything “in shape.” I need that. I need to feel less alone in some of my feelings of inadequacy. Being able to relate to the stories of successful and wise women like Dr. Flippin gives me hope that, when I have discouraging moments, I can climb out of my negative thought spiral and persevere!
One story that I particularly appreciated in the book was when Dr. Flippin got a negative reaction to her research from a mentor. What was helpful to me about the story was that Dr. Flippin went with her gut in moving forward with her work. She recognized that this particular feedback was saying more about the mentor’s experiences than about Dr. Flippin’s research. This resonates because women are often given negative feedback, and we need to know that we can take this feedback and discern whether or not it makes real sense or is about something else.
I also really resonate with the reminder to analyze what I have control over in my life and naming for myself that I do have choices and agency. And the chapter on advocating for myself makes me feel so uncomfortable (I hate advocating for myself!), but Dr. Flippin’s examples and clear strategies make me feel like I could actually give it a try!
I’m really grateful for this book, especially in this moment of personal and social transition. The text is full of practical advice. Dr. Flippin also offers so many real world examples that help me envision myself actually implementing her advice. It gives me tools and hope for a future that I can SHAPE for myself.
