This book was recommended to me for beginning the puberty conversation with my daughter. It opened up a lot of topics for us to discuss and had easy to understand language for her. It says from 8+ and she is 8 so we did skim some information but she’s excited to go back to it when it applies to her.

My daughter 9 and I liked that this was factual yet easy to read. There were no comical talking uterus pictures like other books -just straight forward information presented in a positive way.

Overall I really liked this as a brief introduction for younger kids. It covers so much! However there are a few important things I feel should have been included and one that should be left out. 1) Tampons are NOT flushable. On page 86 its says most tampons are made to be flushable but this is not true. In fact every major tampon manufacturer’s website Ive looked at clearly states they are not. If giving this book to your child you may want to address this before you have to call in a plumber for a clog and even if your pipes dont clog its terrible for our water system and expensive for all of us. 2) The importance of sports bras for many athletic activities. I find so many adults were never educated on sports bras and sometimes this led to less participation in sports due to discomfort or embarrassment. This book covers bras but leaves out important information on when sports bras can be most useful for many people. Information on what types of sports bras to use for what activities would be helpful. Sports bras can prevent chest neck and back pain and make it easier to participate in athletics , reduce muscle fatigue, reduce tissue injury and damage to ligaments, and possibly even reduce risk of breast cancer. For certain sports they are necessary gear for many folks unless their chest is quite small. Even smaller chested folks often find sports bras increase comfort during athletic activity. 3) While some sun exposure is healthy sun protection is important even for folks with more melanin in their skin. The way this is covered makes it sound like sun protection is only necessary for those with less melanin. All skin shades can get sun damage and can benefit from sun protection at times.

This book is a thorough explanation of puberty. It does not get into discussions about sex, sexual attraction or feelings, or anything romantic. I like how thorough the book is, and I like that it discusses how girls should take care of their changing bodies. This book does contain comments that touch on the transgender topic, although it does not use the word “transgender.” (As far as I’ve read; I haven’t finished reading it yet.) It talks about the topic in a way that affirms it. For example, in the intro: “In this book I use the word “girl” to describe the gender of the humans I imagine are reading it. The word “girl” may not feel like the right word to describe you. Maybe you feel more like a boy or maybe you feel like a boy and a girl sometimes. That is okay! You don’t have to feel like a girl at all to read this book and learn how your unique body works.” So on and so forth. On page 25-26: ” Of course, you know that is ridiculous because there is no such thing as a “real” girl. If you feel like a girl, you are a girl!” And again on at the bottom of page 51: “I was in fourth grade and did not want to be a girl…In fifth grade I took my dad’s Ace bandages and tried to flatten [my breasts]. ” So far those are the only instances of this I’ve found. I will update my review after I’ve finished the book.

I bought this book to introduce these difficult subjects to my children. I am reading it now, and even being over 30 years, I am learning so much from it. Self-love is very much promoted and that is the way to teach these subjects. I am truly very happy with this book.

This book about puberty was well done for Tween girls. I love that it reinforces how everyone’s body is unique according to our genes and addresses dieting as unhealthy. It also addresses bullying, peer pressure and social media.

I bought this book for my daughter’s 8th birthday and we LOVE it. We sit together and bond over what she can expect from her evolving body. It’s a great gift for girls. It has all the answers for parents who can’t quite articulate what their daughters (or girls in their lives) need to know. I wish I could give it 10 stars.🌟

I have an 8 year old tomboy daughter who is very fearful about puberty and dreading the changes to her body. I was looking for a book that explains puberty in a way that won’t be intimidating, and which isn’t overly girly in a way that would alienate my daughter and make her feel even more worried. This book is 100% what I was looking for after seeing a number of others which didn’t look like they would appeal to my daughter. The text is written in a very warm, reassuring and straightforward way. The pictures are great, showing girls of different races, sizes, shapes, disabilities, different degrees of femininity etc so that I think there is something that every reader could relate to. My daughter immediately wanted to look at the book and talk about what she saw in it with me. The body positivity message is reinforced throughout- something that I try to do with my daughter but I think it sinks in more when she reads it in a book independently. I am very happy I bought this book and I think she will be referring to it for years to come.

I read it ahead of time before I read it with my daughter. I like the way it is written how its simplified and that it has pictures where it needs to have them. I like that they explain everything from changing body and what that entails it also talks about periods, hormones, and healthy habits. I like that it includes a glossary and even resources. This will help support the information I will give her and hopefully helps her understand it all better. I was very young when I got mine and I had very little information given to me so I want to make sure she is told what I wish I was told at her age.

I like everything about this book: it is like a mother or big sister talking to you. The font is easy on the eyes, and the chapters are short yet chock full of great tips and encouraging words.
