INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER – The Read With Jenna Today Show Book Club Pick!
“”A story of love and hope as interweaving characters display: how all moments, big and small, can measure a life. If you want joy, love, romance, and hope—read with us.”” —Jenna Bush Hager
A luminous, spirit-lifting blockbuster that asks: would you choose to find out the length of your life?
Eight ordinary people. One extraordinary choice.
It seems like any other day. You wake up, drink a cup of coffee, and head out.
But today, when you open your front door, waiting for you is a small wooden box. The contents of this mysterious box tells you the exact number of years you will live.
From suburban doorsteps to desert tents, every person on every continent receives the same box. In an instant, the world is thrust into a collective frenzy. Where did these boxes come from? What do they mean? Is there truth to what they promise?
As society comes together and pulls apart, everyone faces the same shocking choice: Do they wish to know how long they’ll live? And, if so, what will they do with that knowledge?
The Measure charts the dawn of this new world through an unforgettable cast of characters whose decisions and fates interweave with one another: best friends whose dreams are forever entwined, pen pals finding refuge in the unknown, a couple who thought they didn’t have to rush, a doctor who cannot save himself, and a politician whose box becomes the powder keg that ultimately changes everything.
Enchanting and deeply uplifting, The Measure is an ambitious, invigorating story about family, friendship, hope, and destiny that encourages us to live life to the fullest.

Geen groots verhaal maar geeft ondanks dat het fictie is wel stof tot nadenken over hoe je je leven wilt inrichten. Dat maakt het het lezen waard.

I am not much of a reader, but was hoping to get back into it!
This book was fabulous – easy to read, interesting and thought provoking!!!

I finished reading this book on Friday night (stayed up late finishing it!) but needed a few days to compile all my thoughts. It’s such an interesting and thought provoking concept. There were so many layers to the book that I probably still haven’t fully interpreted yet. This is a book that anyone and everyone should read, and one that I’ll definitely read again. It’s so beautifully written and the characters are so relatable. This book will stay with me forever. I can’t wait to see what else Nikki writes.
Andrea –
5 stars for the premise
3 stars for the mediocre writing with way too much telling and not nearly enough showing
1 star for the structure and narrative:
– the “Crash” like stories of people who are knowingly or unknowingly connected to one another kept me from fully immersing in the story
– the predictable final “twist” that actually constitutes a major plothole in the book
– the disappointing way that the fabulous premise ended up in a somewhat dull story
Overall a 3 star average
I’m feeling generous and adding half a star and rounding to 4 stars because it was a very fast read that kept me engaged somehow (after the first 30-40 pages that felt a chore). And made me teary eyed even with some cliches.

I’m giving this book a 3 star because it does have some interesting concepts with life. But I did not like reading this book because it wasn’t really exciting for me to read.
SPOILERS****
I didn’t enjoy the fact that they didn’t find out where the strings came from. It was one of those books that people would get something bad, they go through the 5 stages of grief, and then acceptance. There were crazy moments, like the people who were married for 2 days. They get the box of strings, one long and one short, and they both jumped off a bridge together so they could die together. And what happened, you may ask? One died, other had broken bones and lived. Main characters that had short strings ended up dying, which stinks if you get attached to one.

It is understandable why this novel is high on best sellers lists. The storyline is unique and thought-provoking, with relatable characters dealing with the unusual situation. I liked reading this novel as the author presented some interesting philosophical questions without being ‘heavy’ in the process. I suppose this book would be good for book club sessions. I have to say, however, there is something missing in the overall effect of the book, and this left me being unsatisfied with the ending. But, I still recommend this novel.

Read this book because the title was interesting, but also the author is an alumni of my daughter’s school in Rye, NY. This was a great read, and I’m an avid book reader. Nikki did a wonderful job crafting the individual stories and telling a tale of faith and resilience. Loved it!!

I would say read this book with caution. It is unnerving and I could see this happening as it has all throughout history. Incredibly well written. Great character development. It is just uncomfortable to read.

One of the best novels I have read. Nikki Erlick writes a fine and very exciting story about the greater good without ever being judgemental, biased or schoolmasterly. This book is for the literary backlist, it should be read in every school and discussed all over the world.

The book has a very interesting concept where everyone gets a string that tells you when you are going to die. Do you open the box ? The books make you think about what you would do. There are a few different story lines but each character is connected to each other!
