Detailed description:

“A world-class whodunit.”—Stephen King

“An extremely successful high-wire act, balancing between dark comedy and darker thrills.”—Alex Michaelides, #1 New York Times bestselling author

“Laugh-out-loud funny, thrilling and twisty…”—Liane Moriarty, #1 New York Times bestselling author

“A lot of thrillers these days use the murder podcast as a plot device. This production simulates one better than any audiobook I’ve listened to, to an often hilarious effect. Also, January LaVoy expertly voices one of Lucy’s funniest tics: imagining how she would murder nearly every person with whom she comes in contact.”—Vulture

“Narrator January LaVoy is a treat to listen to, as she gives Lucy the sardonic tone she needs as she grapples with life. LaVoy is also a genius in the way she gives life to Lucy’s inner voice—a psychological shoulder demon who wants to solve every issue with … “let’s kill him.”—The Berkshire Eagle

“Narrator LaVoy absolutely shines as the broken yet charmingly cheeky heroine. Her tale is organically intermixed with podcast excerpts delivered in honeyed and wry tones by Will Damron, each bookended by delightful ‘podcasty’ melodies.”—Booklist

What if you thought you murdered your best friend? And if everyone else thought so too? And what if the truth doesn’t matter?

After Lucy is found wandering the streets, covered in her best friend Savvy’s blood, everyone thinks she is a murderer. Lucy and Savvy were the golden girls of their small Texas town: pretty, smart, and enviable. Lucy married a dream guy with a big ring and an even bigger new home. Savvy was the social butterfly loved by all, and if you believe the rumors, especially popular with the men in town. It’s been years since that horrible night, a night Lucy can’t remember anything about, and she has since moved to LA and started a new life.

But now the phenomenally huge hit true crime podcast “Listen for the Lie,” and its too-good looking host Ben Owens, have decided to investigate Savvy’s murder for the show’s second season. Lucy is forced to return to the place she vowed never to set foot in again to solve her friend’s murder, even if she is the one that did it.

The truth is out there, if we just listen.

Lucy is reluctantly returning to her hometown to celebrate her grans 80th birthday. Reluctant because she is the only suspect in her best friend, Savvy’s murder. Last time she was there she was found injured, covered in her friends blood and carrying her murder weapon! Lucy suffered a brain injury during the incident and jas no memory of what happened to Savvy, but crime podcasts Ben is there to solve this crime and Lucy agrees ro help him uncover the truth!
Lucy is a brilliant character…flawed, witty with a dark sense of humour and a voice in her head driving her to kill. I loved the podcast aspect of this book and slowly uncovering lots of secrets that led to Savvys murder. Its a compelling read. There were a lot of characters introduced and keeping up with how they all linked was a bit of work at times. The ending was very unexpected…definitely not the way I personally expected or would have liked. Don’t trust anyone!

“And people hate that quality in a young woman, don’t they? They don’t know what to do with a girl who isn’t looking for their approval. They feel like they have to bring her down a peg.”

Five years ago, Lucy was found wandering the streets of her small Texas hometown covered in Savvy’s blood without any recollection of what transpired between the two best friends. Despite all the proof that Lucy murdered Savvy, the police lacked sufficient evidence to make an arrest. Although Lucy was never charged, that didn’t stop her family and friends from coming to a verdict in her close-knit community. Desperate to start over, Lucy left her big house and dreamboat husband in hopes of greater anonymity in Los Angeles.

Everything changes with this cold case thanks to the popular true crime podcast, “Listen for the Lie.” Ben Owens, the podcast’s handsome host, makes Savvy’s murder his crime to solve in the show’s second season and Lucy finds she has no choice but to return to the place she vowed never to come home to.

This is a fun, dark, twisty whodunnit with a strong, sharp-tongued FMC who doesn’t care what anyone thinks about her. In fact, Lucy’s as committed to finding Savvy’s killer as Ben is, even if it means it really is her. Besides, she’s become used to the fact everyone thinks she’s a murderer. Lucy knows the truth doesn’t matter. It only matters what people believe.

The book starts off with a great storyline, which is captivating, I’m not the biggest fan of the main character Lucy.
I don’t think the book has a clear ending… Rather, it is left with two probably scenarios for readers to figure out.
However, this is the first book I’ve read from this author, looking forward to read more.

Awesome who-dun-it story with excellent writing, and I’m normally a bit stingy when it comes to offering too much praise!

My first time reading a book from this author, but not my last!

Amy Tintera masterfully switches between the voices of Lucy and Ben. The plot thickens through the voice of the two narrators and it feels like a real true crime podcast with the bonus of knowing the subject on very personal level. This one is a page turner!

    4/5 ⭐️

Lucy Chase may have forgotten Plumpton but Plumpton has not forgotten her. It is hard to ignore the girl who supposedly murdered her best friend but does not remember anything. Savvy Harper was the town’s sweetheart and a charmer, especially with the men. Lucy and Savvy were inseparable so everyone was shocked when Lucy was found roaming the streets covered in Savvy’s blood. Five years have passed since that horrible night and Lucy has moved on to start fresh in LA.

When a family event brings Lucy home, she is forced to face the past. Not only does she have to answer to the town, but Ben Owens, a famous true-crime podcaster shows up and has questions for Lucy. Lucy has never spoken to anyone or given an interview until now. She decides to help Ben with his podcast “Listen for the Lie” and solve Savvy’s murder once and for all. Even if this means she could be the one who did it.

Listen for the Lie was a fast-paced, twisty mystery that I could not put down. The writing format alternated among real-time, flashbacks and Ben’s podcasts. The best part of this compelling thriller was its dark humor. Also, Lucy is a phenomenal character with her sass and sense of humor. She is a hot mess but her quick wit and sarcasm make her very likable. I have a few complaints about this book. The first one is the amnesia trope is overdone! And the second one is Lucy’s family is appalling; everyone except her grandmother. Lastly, I have so many questions about the ending. Lucy makes a very vague statement that leaves me bewildered. I like mysteries wrapped up neatly with a bow.

Clever and well written. One of my favourite reads of the year.

This was an amazing read. I was on pin cushions trying to figure out the truth t
Up to the end. It was so entertaining and the main character was complicated, messy, heartbroken, sassy, sarcastic…….everything you don’t realize you want in the heroine. The friendship in this book is in true Thelma and Louise spirit and showed the complex small town life and ridiculously crazy family intricacies.

Me entretuvo mucho. Esta muy bien construida la trama y la historia se desarrolla de forma que cada capitulo sorprende.

    Favorite quotes —

“I’m the relative that you tell everyone about at parties, when you’re comparing fucked-up families. I make for a good story. You don’t invite me to the party.”

“I seriously don’t understand developing a drinking problem in your seventies,” “Why not? Way I see it, seems like the perfect time to develop a drinking problem. It’s dull as hell around here.”

“Better to be interesting than likable, in my opinion.”

    My thoughts —

If you need a bingeable thriller, look no further.

What if you thought you murdered your best friend…and so does everyone else in your home town? That’s what happened to Lucy Chase — the problem is she can’t remember anything from that night. But Ben Owens, host of the Listen for the Lie podcast, is confident in his ability to help uncover the truth by interviewing witnesses and getting an exclusive look into Lucy’s perspective.

This book was captivating all the way through and the ending completely caught me off guard. We get to see first hand how your mind plays tricks when you’ve gone through a traumatic experience…but who can you trust if you can’t even trust yourself? There was so much scandal and drama uncovered that left me guessing up until the very end, and I could not for the life of me figure out who did it. I absolutely love books like this (either that or I’ve been out of the thriller game for too long 🤪).

I found myself audibly cackling at Lucy’s sarcasm in serious situations, as she is constantly being judged and picked apart, so why not make light of a bad situation? Her grandma was the real star of the show, though. I want to be her when I grow up — that woman knows how to LIVE. An unbothered queen who knows what she wants, and knows what’s right.

Personally, I think incorporating a teeny bit more romance/tension would have enhanced the story and characters even more. Although I wasn’t expecting it in the first place, it was there and it had so much potential to kick the plot up a notch. This is coming from a romance girlie though, so take that with a grain of salt😅

    Reader experience —

I would recommend listening to the audiobook for this one, I paired it with the e-book and it’s an ✨experience✨. I felt like I was watching a movie. Seriously, grab some popcorn, sit back and enjoy🍿
