Detailed description:

“This brilliant book will shatter your assumptions about what it takes to improve and succeed. I wish I could go back in time and gift it to my younger self. It would’ve helped me find a more joyful path to progress.”—Serena Williams, 23-time Grand Slam singles tennis champion

The #1 New York Times bestselling author of Think Again illuminates how we can elevate ourselves and others to unexpected heights.

We live in a world that’s obsessed with talent. We celebrate gifted students in school, natural athletes in sports, and child prodigies in music. But admiring people who start out with innate advantages leads us to overlook the distance we ourselves can travel. We underestimate the range of skills that we can learn and how good we can become. We can all improve at improving. And when opportunity doesn’t knock, there are ways to build a door.

Hidden Potential offers a new framework for raising aspirations and exceeding expectations. Adam Grant weaves together groundbreaking evidence, surprising insights, and vivid storytelling that takes us from the classroom to the boardroom, the playground to the Olympics, and underground to outer space. He shows that progress depends less on how hard you work than how well you learn. Growth is not about the genius you possess—it’s about the character you develop. Grant explores how to build the character skills and motivational structures to realize our own potential, and how to design systems that create opportunities for those who have been underrated and overlooked.

Many writers have chronicled the habits of superstars who accomplish great things. This book reveals how anyone can rise to achieve greater things. The true measure of your potential is not the height of the peak you’ve reached, but how far you’ve climbed to get there.

I’m still on the first chapter, but I’m hooked! Great so far! I’m trying to find any extra moment to keep reading. I’m looking forward to what this book can teach me. It has already started to motivate me and change my mindset. I highly suggest!

Always enjoy Adam’s books. Informative and well-written, they always provide food for many thoughts.

  3. Rachel Gollub

Grant argues in this book that success is dependent on learned skills (being proactive, prosocial, disciplined, and determined) rather than on innate ability. The book gives hints and examples for how to build those skills. Well written, but a little more like a collection of ideas (some great) than an orderly progression. Well worth reading!

I have been a fan of Adam Grant’s work. What generally appeals to me his lucidity in ideas, and simplicity in articulation. The book does the same , the pages turn, and the ideas speak directly. Loved the premise Jose Hernandez store, the lattice organization and the idea of “imperfectionist “. All lofty , and yet practical ideas for a better world .

Just read it, enjoy and learn!

It gives practical overview of what it takes to navigate they stages of imperfections and journey of becoming well in any field you are in.

Very very helpful if you are changing your career or thinking to start your own business or getting into new venture. This will act like a lighthouse towards this journey.

I thought throughout the book while reading if I’m liking it because of the book or because I have enjoyed all the books I have read so far by Adam Grant. With each section, study, and finding, my decision in reading this book was being reaffirmed.

The book not only covers the personal effort required of us to fulfill the hidden potential within us but also the effort we need to find in our close groups and the effort we need to exert in the world at large and its archaic systems. It begins with the discussion of imposter syndrome and how we should focus on progress and excellence but not perfection. It goes on to talk about the support we should find in the community and how to find motivation through societal interactions. Finally, it talks about building systems that amplify the potential.

At the end of my read, this book has left me with a charged feeling where factual knowledge matches what I feel and I felt I knew all along. This book is one of my best reads this year.

The big differences between this book and other self-help book are as follows.
    1. This book is based on scientific evidence. Most of the guides written in this book are proved through experiment or statistical data.
    2. This books is well mixed with author’s experience and insight. This book is not summary of author hearing of a subject. This is implies author’s insight through his life and deep thinking. I appreciate his generous mind to share his important insights with readers.
    3. This book is written plain English, but the contents are not light. Exciting to read but reader has to focus and memorize important messages.
This book deserves to buy, and I wish others earn author’s deep insights like me.

  9. PG

Adam Grant is a dominant voice in the world of psychology so expectations are always very high. This book almost does justice to those expectations but IMHO, this is not a seminal piece of work (yet). It is somewhat of a mix between Angela Duckworth’s Grit and Malcolm Gladwell’s Outliers. Unlike Grit it doesn’t have many prescriptive solutions and unlike Outliers, it has fewer stories that are interesting. Some of this 2*2 grids are not very intuitive either. However, this books should be read for two things:
    – Some norms that are challenged e.g., he challenges the full efficacy of 10,000 rule to master something, rather advocating for “harmonious passion” as a complementary technique.
    – His catchy writing (almost too catchy). The content is replete with his trademark three-sentence articulation. Sample this: “A critic sees your weaknesses and attacks your worst self. A cheerleader sets your strengths and celebrates your best self. A coach sees your potential and helps you become a better version of yourself.”

Net: It is a good book and as long as you temper your expectations a little bit, you should be good.
And I do think that a seminal piece of work from Grant is around the corner.

    Enjoy.

I really enjoyed reading this book, and I bought a second copy so I could send it to my friend who’s a principal. This is a great book that really made me consider how we think about potential, how we can foster it, and why we should look for potential in each person.
