Now a New York Times bestseller!

If you grew up with an emotionally immature, unavailable, or selfish parent, you may have lingering feelings of anger, loneliness, betrayal, or abandonment. You may recall your childhood as a time when your emotional needs were not met, when your feelings were dismissed, or when you took on adult levels of responsibility in an effort to compensate for your parent’s behavior. These wounds can be healed, and you can move forward in your life.

In this breakthrough book, clinical psychologist Lindsay Gibson exposes the destructive nature of parents who are emotionally immature or unavailable. You will see how these parents create a sense of neglect, and discover ways to heal from the pain and confusion caused by your childhood. By freeing yourself from your parents’ emotional immaturity, you can recover your true nature, control how you react to them, and avoid disappointment. Finally, you’ll learn how to create positive, new relationships so you can build a better life.

Discover the four types of difficult parents:

  • The emotional parent instills feelings of instability and anxiety
  • The driven parent stays busy trying to perfect everything and everyone
  • The passive parent avoids dealing with anything upsetting
  • The rejecting parent is withdrawn, dismissive, and derogatory

Was super helpful to understand how parents immature behavior impacts us and how we can perpetuate these behaviors if we don’t see them for what they are and make changes in ourselves. I found it very valuable to read.

  2. Mikayla C Easterling

This is a great book and has helped me to learn a lot about myself. I know this isn’t a book written directly to Christians, but if you are a Christian that is hesitant to get this book, get the book. It is a great resource to help you grow emotionally.

I am glad I read this book. Growing up with emotionally immature parents in a dysfunctional household has taken a toll over my mind and body. This book added to my existing knowledge of childhood trauma. And it will also be useful in identifying emotionally mature people now as an adult. This book is quite a handy tool to have if you are already working with trauma therapist.

I wish I can bring this book everywhere with me! It’s so useful and necessary for learning what exactly is needed for harboring genuine, healthy, and authentic relationships with all of the people within your life. There is also a focus on self-reflection and self-love.. basically making yourself a true priority and not living life playing “roles” to satisfy others. I LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS BOOK!

My physicist recommended this book. It was an eye opener. Something I personally needed to understand things about my childhood, parents, my relationships. Great read for a great price.

  6. Ariel

This was very enlightening for me. My therapist told me that people who have a certain trauma as children have their emotional maturity stall at the age of the trauma. So I read this book and it nailed it. All the characteristics that have been frustrating me about my mom my whole life were laid out. It was easy to read and understand. It was validating and I don’t have anger about it anymore. Now I just try to navigate my interactions with this new understanding that I have. Now I’m reading it again to self evaluate for personal growth. Definitely recommend.

  7. Jael Aldunate

This book was very eye opening and healing. It enables the reader to understand and see the patterns of emotionally immature parents. It helped me understand the pattern of behaviors of my parents as I grew up and also understand why my childhood was the way it was. This can help anyone on the road to healing from childhood wounds.

  8. Emily Louise Stollmeyer

I love that this book is so concise and to the point. Very clear, with interesting examples. Even if you don’t think your parents are emotionally immature, it helps you understand friend’s parents, friends themselves, difficult people in general. Highly recommend.

  9. Ariel

    Worth the read. Life changing.

  10. Kerrick Liev

This is a great book and I’m learning a lot. The only reason for the 4 stars is the reader’s voice on audible is irritating and stagey; it distracts from the words.

  11. Joe G.

Este libro debería ser obligatorio en la adolescencia de todxs

  12. Weronika Matysik
