“Millions of eyes were suddenly upon us, creating a picture I will never forget.” ―Paul McCartney
Taken with a 35mm camera by Paul McCartney, these largely unseen photographs capture the explosive period, from the end of 1963 through early 1964, in which The Beatles became an international sensation and changed the course of music history. Featuring 275 images from the six cities―Liverpool, London, Paris, New York, Washington, D.C., and Miami―of these legendary months, 1964: Eyes of the Storm also includes:
• A personal foreword in which McCartney recalls the pandemonium of British concert halls, followed by the hysteria that greeted the band on its first American visit
• Candid recollections preceding each city portfolio that form an autobiographical account of the period McCartney remembers as the “Eyes of the Storm,” plus a coda with subsequent events in 1964
• “Beatleland,” an essay by Harvard historian and New Yorker essayist Jill Lepore, describing how The Beatles became the first truly global mass culture phenomenon
Handsomely designed, 1964: Eyes of the Storm creates an intensely dramatic record of The Beatles’ first transatlantic trip, documenting the radical shift in youth culture that crystallized in 1964.
“You could hold your camera up to the world, in 1964. But what madness would you capture, what beauty, what joy, what fury?” ―Jill Lepore

Great pics of The Beatles, mostly without Paul which is a bit strange as I always felt he was an important member of the group maybe he hadn’t joined at that point

Das Buch ist qualitativ sehr hochwertig und bringt sehr schön die unterschiedlichsten Emotionen rüber. Vor allem die ruhigen Momente sind berührend. Sehr schön Paul!

As soon as I received this awesome big photo book of reflections and photos by Paul McCartney I immediately opened it. It is broken down by town in the year 1964. A time capsule when the Beatles were just making it big and very interesting. He shares memories of each place and then shares photos. I found myself looking up people that were featured that I didn’t know about or remember. It brought back memories of gathering with friends to watch together the Ed Sullivan show when they, The Beatles, first performed. Loved it. A wonderful coffee table book.

Obviously a book of photographs about the Beatles by a Beatle is going to show a side to their story that no one else could tell. While not a gifted photographer McCartney has a good eye for an interesting moment and a simple storytelling composition. The book benefits greatly from his stories and from skillful photo editing, and printing by others. This is the next best thing to being able to see the prints in a museum or gallery setting.

I had never seen these photos before so it was fun seeing them for the first time! I did buy it a few months after its release though, so a few of the pictures I had seen online already. Paul really managed to capture Beatlemania from his own point of view and the photos are such good quality.

What a luxuriant trip down memory lane this is for me and my best bud! I am taking my time perusing the photos at a special time at the end of the work day enjoying a cold one while dinner cooks!

Even if you’re not a Beatles fan (which I can’t imagine), I highly recommend this book. Just to see a glimpse of the Fab Four’s perspective as they skyrocketed into celebrity is such a privilege. Through Paul’s keen eye you can tell that the Beatles were in awe of the situation as it unfolded. Very well put together and a fun coffee table book to have or to give as a gift.
