I have come from a family who didn’t really yell and my husband has come from one that yells all the time. When we had our children there was a lot of learning curves on how we wanted to talk to our children so we decided to get this book to better us a parents and it is amazing. I have learned a new way of calming myself down when my child has tantrums and looking at things in a different perspective. I am able to talk to my child instead of matching his outbursts with my own. I highly recommend this book it has been a great help.

  2. Garrett

What I love most about this book is all the actionable steps provided, plus parents’ stories that make me feel less alone in this “maddening” parenting journey. I like the straight forward writing and the summary section at the end of each chapter. I would recommend this book to anybody who has toddler that started to talk!

  3. Mariam

It’s quite amazing how good this book can work. It is very easy explained and it has a lot of draws and examples. It’s also very realistic: It never sells magic solutions, nor says everything will work for everybody. So, it’s like being in a workshop with another parents, but in your home and in your own.

I cannot say enough good things about this book. I picked it up while visiting my sister and couldn’t put it down! Each chapter focuses on relevant and practical parenting issues and gives clear and manageable advice. Instead of telling parents to just be more patient, it actually provides simple things you can do and say (seriously, exact words and phrases) in the moment. You can practice these tips and get better, which is really encouraging.

It also doesn’t beat you up for failing. The authors recognize that parents are people and have real feelings, so their advice never feels shaming or patronizing. I found this particularly refreshing because authors of parenting books usually seem perfect and are totally unrelatable.

I have found that my mindset has shifted quite a bit since reading this book. I’m actually planning to pick it up and go through it again to help reinforce the techniques. I HIGHLY recommend reading this!

  6. Jennifer Davis

The first time I purchased this book was in the 90s – it was much shorter, more direct, and easier to understand and use. It has become overly long and a bit intimidating! Sometimes it’s best to leave simple and direct things alone – this was one of them. For that reason, four instead of five stars. I’d suggest a newer, shortened edition without all the filler.

Has a lot of useful information on ways to get through to your kids by changing your own bad habits of ways of speaking.

I absolutely loved & enjoyed reading this book. I don’t have children yet but I’m very passionate about raising kids and acknowledging their feelings. This book gives you great insight of how you may feel if you was in your child’s shoes which gives you a better understanding of how your child may be feeling. I think sometimes we forget that children are new & trying to figure out the world, they are not naughty they are learning. There’s many things in this book that they discuss that gives you the opportunity to put it into practice. Also gives a chance to break generational cycles of what they think is “best way to parent” being understanding to your child’s needs doesn’t mean your child is spoil as what ( older generations would think or say). I think anyone can read this book parents , nursery nurses , nanny’s or parents expecting! Such a great read and highly recommend!

This book made me think about a lot of daily things I do and say to my child and I am grateful for the new perspective and the little exercises it offered. While it won’t be easy to implement this way of talking, listening and parenting, I can only strive to do my best, as I would love to break the cycle in my family
