Detailed description:

This new edition of Systematic Theology by Wayne Grudem may be the most important resource you can own for helping you understand Scripture and grow as a Christian.

The most widely used resource of the last 25 years in its area, Systematic Theology by Wayne Grudem has been thoroughly revised and expanded (all 57 chapters) for the first time while retaining the features that have made it the standard in its field: clear explanations, an emphasis on each doctrine’s scriptural basis, and practical applications to daily life.

Praise for the second edition:

“After a quarter century of remarkable usefulness globally . . . it remains remarkable. I thank God for this precious gift to Christ’s people worldwide.” – John Piper

“Stands out for its clarity and accessibility.” – Thomas R. Schreiner

“One of those rare works that can challenge the scholar and instruct the beginner . . . It is simply indispensable.” – Jack Deere

With nearly 250 pages of new content and revisions that took several years, this new edition now includes the following distinctive features, making it even better:

  • Updated, fuller analysis of several recent controversies within evangelicalism, including the eternal relationship between the Father and the Son in the Trinity, the question of God’s atemporal eternity, the role of women in the church, “seeker-sensitive” churches, miraculous gifts of the Holy Spirit, and contemporary worship music.
  • New, thoughtful critiques of open theism, the “new perspective on Paul,” Molinism (or “middle knowledge”), “Free Grace” theology, and the preterist view of Christ’s second coming
  • Completely revised, stronger chapter on the clarity of Scripture
  • Completely revised, stronger chapter on creation and evolution, including a longer critique of theistic evolution and an extensive discussion on the age of the earth
  • New discussion of how biblical inerrancy applies to some specific “problem verses” in the Gospels
  • Additional material respectfully explaining evangelical Protestant differences with Roman Catholicism (with extensive interaction with the Catechism of the Roman Catholic Church), Protestant liberalism, and Mormonism
  • Completely updated bibliographies
  • All Scripture quotations updated from RSV to ESV
  • An explanation of why monogenes in John 3:16 and elsewhere should be translated as “only begotten” rather than merely “only” (this is a change from the first edition)
  • A contemporary worship song added at the end of each chapter (while retaining the traditional hymns as well)
  • New discussion on the impassibility of God
  • An extensive discussion on the eternal submission of the Son to the Father, taking into account controversies in recent years
  • Updated section on contemporary worship music
  • A discussion of recent criticisms of the penal substitutionary view of the atonement
  • Numerous other updates and corrections that have be prompted by letters and emails from people around the world and by interaction with the students Wayne has taught over the last 26 years both at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School and at Phoenix Seminary

Part of the brilliance of Systematic Theology over the years has been its simplicity and ease of use. Each chapter follows the same structure. First, there is discussion of the doctrine being considered, such as justification or the Trinity or the deity of Christ. An explanation of that doctrine’s biblical support and possible objections follow. Personal application and key terms to know for personal growth are then provided. Chapters also include a Scripture memory passage, references to other literature on the topic, and suggested hymns and worship songs.

If you are someone who thinks theology is hard to understand or boring, then this new edition of Systematic Theology will likely change your mind.

  1. Eye on the prize

On page 1 Grudem defines “systematic theology” as any study that answers the question, “What does the whole Bible teach us today about any given topic. So if someone tries to convince you of their view on a topic, you can consult this book and you can be sure that all the relevant verses are referenced. Aslo in the areas where their are heavy hitters on different sides of a debate, their postions are summariezed. You don’t have to do your own study and make sure you have all the verses and understand the doctrines they fit into. I have listened to Grudem deliver a summary of this book and he seems very even tempered. The book also reflects that. He tries to be as fair as he can. I have not been to seminary but my friends who have, recommend this book. It is accessable to a non seminarian.

Got it at a great price, much cheaper than on bookdepository, with an even faster shipping. Looking forward to reading it soon.

  3. Tim

    Great resource.

  4. W. J. Middleton 111

I am not halfway through this heavy volume but enjoying the wonderful writing and insights. Thank you Dr Grudem for writing this in terms that an old layman such as myself can understand. I am so grateful.

The table of contents helps me to not be overwhelmed with the size of the book and the amount of information. It actually invites me to delve into doctrine in an organized and clear way. Showing me how to start and continue until finished. The outline format is helpful and breaks information into clear learning sections that encourage thinking breaks. I am relying on W. Grudem to help me to understand better so that I might grow in depth of knowledge to better glorify God.

My wife and I have a collection of many Biblical related books and Bibles. On occassion, we discuss some of our different takes on issues and theology. Rarely, do we disagree. One relative is a new believer and the world is only black and white. Lets say, “George” comes over and makes a lot of noise looking for a debate. Though hard not to, we usually tell him enough. This book helps us sort out the fine points. A very good book and well recommended by experts. Worth the buy!

  7. Dr Stephen Strange

This book is written for students in a classroom setting as a prescribed reading material. For what it has set out to do, this book is an all encompassing great tome of scholarly work with lots of snippets and references. Yes it is an easy read but lay leaders might find it a bit dry, less compelling, lacking in literary style/energy, unpretentiously academic and hence it will play the role of a reference volume rather than an engaging read. However, A-Z of biblical doctrine and theology is covered. The binding of this book is great and built to last.

I ordered this for my husband, and its comprehensive readings have been just what he wanted, to help him in understanding the Christian Bible.

  9. Cooey

I read and studied the first edition of this classic and all encompassing work and loved it, so when I saw the second edition had finally been published I couldn’t wait to dive in again and own this revised edition. While most of the content is the same as the first edition there is more detail in the questions, exploratory content and worship suggestions. A must have for any level of Bible study and as a reference work for your library. I highly recommend this well researched, beautifully executed classic.

Page 648 is already chapter 25. However it has a chapter 24 headline. It’s an error that needs to be corrected.

Used by colleges all over the world this book as a text book, it is perfect for the home student too. Written clearly and from a conservative evangelical perspective. If you get the Kindle edition you can take it anywhere.

  12. Telebiopic

What an amazing book. It not only talks about Biblical doctrines, but delves into them in great detail and suggests application for life. A fantastic textbook for my studies.
