Detailed description:

His extraordinary debut, Those Across the River, was hailed as “genre-bending Southern horror” (California Literary Review), “graceful [and] horrific” (Patricia Briggs). Now Christopher Buehlman invites readers into an even darker age—one of temptation and corruption, of war in heaven, and of hell on earth… And Lucifer said: “Let us rise against Him now in all our numbers, and pull the walls of heaven down…” The year is 1348. Thomas, a disgraced knight, has found a young girl alone in a dead Norman village. An orphan of the Black Death, and an almost unnerving picture of innocence, she tells Thomas that plague is only part of a larger cataclysm—that the fallen angels under Lucifer are rising in a second war on heaven, and that the world of men has fallen behind the lines of conflict. Is it delirium or is it faith? She believes she has seen the angels of God. She believes the righteous dead speak to her in dreams. And now she has convinced the faithless Thomas to shepherd her across a depraved landscape to Avignon. There, she tells Thomas, she will fulfill her mission: to confront the evil that has devastated the earth, and to restore to this betrayed, murderous knight the nobility and hope of salvation he long abandoned. As hell unleashes its wrath, and as the true nature of the girl is revealed, Thomas will find himself on a macabre battleground of angels and demons, saints, and the risen dead, and in the midst of a desperate struggle for nothing less than the soul of man.

This book will grip you with horror, awe, heart wrenching sadness, timid but hard-won joy, and most of all, leave you feeling profoundly breathless at an expertly told tale of biblical proportions.

Think, all the medieval lore of Dante’s Divine Comedy, and the epic tale of Paradise Lost, but told from the very relatable point of view of characters so real and likable, it feels like modern story about a ragtag family-by-circumstance trying to survive in a world growing ever more damned.

This book more than any other that I’ve read, truly brings you into the mindset of a 14th century medieval citizen, witnessing horrors (man made, natural, and supernatural) beyond comprehension. The human spirit is brought to its knees, decimated, and tortured, and still the quest must go on.

It’s horror with a purpose, and thanks to the love you develop for the characters, the horror becomes even more terrifying. I constantly had my hand to my mouth shocked at what happened next.

The ending of the book is spellbinding and like a cavalry charge— impossible to put down.

Somehow, this story rooted in very real cosmologies of medieval Christianity, when told by Christopher Buehlman, is far, far more compelling than your run of the mill high fantasy.

If you’ve any interest in accurate medieval fantasy, or any interest in biblical angel/demon supernatural stories, this is the book for you. An absolute must read!!!!!

    Very good book. Simple
to digest but heavy with emotions and themes. Read it if you are a fan of the Dark Fantasy genre, Video Games like Dark Souls or fans of the Witcher :=)

Probably the best fantasy book I’ve read in many years. It’s darkly funny, thrilling, mysterious and just pure fresh and a fun read

I had been searching amazon, google, reddit for the best horror books to jump into. Author Chris Buehlman and this book (and his others) came up frequently, so I gave it a chance. I was initially hesitant due to the religious aspect of the book’s description. What I discovered was my new favorite book and the standard I hold all my other fantasy or horror books against. The religion is not presented in a preachy way, just part of the story. To me, the perspective and writing style were dream-like. I felt like I was watching the story with focus on the characters and everything around them slightly dulled, in a good way, like murky danger is around every corner. The reader is shown what is going on without pages of fluff or unneccessary descriptions. The closest similar experience I can imagine is a mix between The Road and The Witcher. Lovable characters, action, horror, adventure await. It even had one part that scared me and that is difficult to do. It also moved me to tears at two points. I cannot recommend this book enough! I have also read The Necromancer’s House (same author 4.5/5 also made me cry), and cannot wait to read the rest of Mr. Buehlman’s work!

A little bit of a repetitive structure along the journey, a bit extraneous backstories that dont enhance the plot, slightly tropey with the archetypes, the horrors introduced are New ideas? But a little rushed/glossed at times. Author can trip over his wording at times/theres a typo in my edition..

On the good side, it keeps you guessing with some good twists and turns, the story always moves, with decent pacing, some early easter eggs can get reintroduced, which is always fun. You quickly get attached to the main chars. Easy font to read, always a plus.

Best parts: “night tourney”, and “river float”.. great imo.

  7. Julie Bardoux

Excellent writing, great characters, weird, wild, philosophical. Favorite book I’ve read in long time.

  8. Caveman

I don’t call it the best novel I’ve ever read lightly, it’s honestly some of the weirdest dark fantasy I’ve ever read. It’s weird, haunting, and sometimes hilarious, it’s a must read for people who like something new and different, and also someone who has an interest in European history.

  9. Jason C. King

An easy and engaging read. A bit more of a ‘fantasy’ book than I expected. Loved the plot and thought the characters were decently developed. I felt the author relied too much on the character’s dreams to move the story along but appreciated the nod to historical accuracy (especially medieval weaponry, society, city life). Also – loved the book’s size and font size.

    A great horror/fantasy book

It’s been too long since I’ve red something this well written and engaging. Can’t recommend this enough.

  12. Taig

Wow. Unbelievable. I’m nearly at a loss for words as I finish the last page of this staggeringly beautiful and poignant tale. It is truly a masterpiece of prose, narrative and characterization of unbelievable beauty. It is a work of fiction (I certainly hope!) but I have a feeling that a surprising amount of it is more than the mere product of imagination. I have rarely been so exquisitely lost in another world so thoroughly and so deeply as I have in the past several days it’s taken me to devour it. I also have no doubt it will be in my thoughts for a very, very long time to come.

  13. Humble Plant Father

Picked this up on a recommendation I saw on social media and so glad I did. The story is an amazing and scary journey from start to finish. The setting is so vivid and well thought. And the characters are so dynamic. This has definitely made me a fan of this author.
