FROM THE PLAYGROUND TO THE PREMIER LEAGUE

An inspiring, page-turning series perfect for young readers 7 to 13 years old, and for sports fans of all ages.

Born and raised in a small town, Leo K. Doyle has never seen the ocean or stepped foot on a plane. But Leo is a star soccer player with big dreams in life.

Rock-star, Olympic gold, dragon-slaying dreams.

While Leo has a pet lizard named Messi and longs to make the pros one day, he has no idea how to achieve his goal—until a professional scout pays a chance visit to one of Leo’s games and extends an invitation to try out for the London Dragons youth squad, known as The Academy.

Leo is stunned. The London Dragons isn’t just any old soccer team. It’s a world-famous English Premier League team. Soon Leo is off to a whole new country, embarking on the greatest adventure of his life. The downside? Only eleven players can make the team.

Eleven out of two hundred of the very best youth players on the planet.

Along with the grueling competition, Leo must also face a bully intent on torpedoing his summer, a roomie who doesn’t know how to have fun, a terrifying camp director, and, most of all, Leo’s own lack of formal training and the fear he’ll never succeed. By the end of the summer, Leo will become a much better player and forever changed by his experience.

But will he be good enough to make the Academy?

    Enjoyable story for elementary-school-aged kids.

Well written and leaves you wanting more! Thank goodness there are now 4 books in the series. We’ve read 2 of them and will be sad once we’ve finished all 4. Hoping more books are coming from this very talented writer!

Our soccer mentor recommended this books for our 9 year old! The book is amazing and highly recommend reading it together as there are so many valuable lessons that kids can pick up from Leo’s journey and discuss! We started book too and so excited to see book 4 was just released! We also bought it for a birthday gift for another avid soccer player and it was a huge hit! Definitely recommend!!!

I was unsure whether my 9 year old son would enjoy this book as there wasn’t many pictures in the story and there is was alot of text. He is usually a fan of diary of the wimpy kid because of the illustrations within the book but my son was totally gripped by this book and quickly asked for me to buy the next in the series. He loved the theme of the story (he is an avid football fan) and found the wording easy to understand and the story was entertaining and easy to follow. I feel the price was a little on the expensive side but I happily bought all 3 books in the series. I would definitely recommend. I will hold on to this series for his younger brother.

Give it a try for your little football fan.

Purchased for our 9yr old son. My husband and I alternate bedtime and we all got engrossed with Leo and his story, so much so that we had to fill the other in on what happened on our “off” nights – or when our son read on his own (previously a very rare occurrence!). The author does an amazing job developing the characters and providing clear descriptions so even those with little to no soccer expertise can imagine the action. The story is well-rounded, going beyond the game itself, giving life lessons and valuable insights into relationships – family, friends, coach/player/team. An excellent addition to a home library – can’t wait for the next book in the series (we’ve read 3 so far)!

  9. Robin

We loved the energy of the book and the competition aspect made it super fun to read all the way through. Great book!

  10. Tressa

I’ve been reading it on car trips, everyone from the 7 year old to the husband are loving it. It’s very well written, great for soccer lovers and dreamers. There are twists and turns and good lessons learned.

Great book for my son who is into soccer. He is able to connect with the book and I don’t even need to force him to read it. It was a part of his birthday gift when he turned 11 and he’s enjoying it!!

As a parent, finding a book that captures my son’s attention is a rare and wonderful thing, and “The Academy” by T.Z. Layton has done just that! My son, an avid soccer player, was immediately drawn into the world of a young American boy navigating the challenges of an English professional soccer academy. The detailed soccer play, combined with a relatable and compelling main character, kept him turning pages eagerly.

What impressed me most was how the book balanced technical soccer terms with a storyline that was accessible and engaging. Yes, there are many characters and soccer jargon, but my son found this added to the realism and excitement. The secondary plot, including a subtle love interest, was a nice touch that added depth without overwhelming the main story.

This book is not just for young readers; I found myself enjoying the story too, making it a great shared reading experience. It’s well-written, informative, and perfectly pitched for young sports enthusiasts. I highly recommend “The Academy” for young readers, especially those with a passion for soccer. It’s a game-changer in YA sports fiction!

My son and I read together every night. He has played soccer for years and loved the story and characters. He told me it inspired him to try new skills in games. It’s also great to watch the lead character struggle through relatable themes. Book one was a Christmas present but he used his own money to buy books two and three. That’s how much he loved it. Great life lessons woven in with a fun story that is perfect for a 10-12 year old soccer player.
