This is an adorable, silly book. My 2 year old has taken it as a security blanket. She has to have it read every night before bed and then sleep with it as well. The rhyming is delightful and my children have always enjoyed this author’s books.

First of all, this is a spoiler alert. I will be reviewing the book in detail. If you don’t want the ending to be ruined, STOP READING NOW!

I give this book 5 stars only because it is an entertaining book, with cute illustrations, positive messages and a rhyming text that is easy to read. What I mean by easy to read is that it remains enjoyable for both the toddler and adult after several readings. As part of a going to bed ritual, it is just the right length to read every night.

Now down to the nitty-gritty: One reviewer mentioned it disturbed her that all of the characters bathed together. True! But even worse is the fact that they are all animals and they are bathing together ACROSS SPECIES. There are elephants and bunnies all in the tub together. Isn’t that a gateway activity to bestiality? And they are on a boat that resembles an ark. Isn’t that implying that God condones bestiality?

Then, the animals are putting on their pajamas and the pig has no pants on. Really? Pantless pigs? And to add insult to injury, the rhino is buttoning his own pjs. Even the illustration shows how impossible that would be ~ if rhinos wore pjs.

Others have mentioned it is ridiculous to have the characters exercising after bathing ~ that no one should exercise after bathing. I agree. But they failed to mention that on the exercising page, a moose is holding a barbell above his head. Can you imagine what would happen if a toddler got hold of a barbell and held it over his head? Children learn by example, people. I feel obliged to explain every time I read the book that it is not acceptable for a toddler to hold a barbell over his head. I’m not sure he even understands what I mean by that.

Lastly, to those who complained that the book was too small, and to those who complained that the book was too short: Absolutely!! I prefer my board books to be at least 9” x 12” and 25 to 30 pages. Toddlers find these much easier to handle.

A child I babysat years ago had this book and I loved it, this Christmas I thought of it again and sought it out for my niece. Was surprised how affordable it was! It arrived quickly and in good condition!

The contents are a sweet rhyming story of a ship crewed by animals getting ready for bed. The illustrations are really cute and as you can see in the previews, have a soft painterly style with gentle colors, which lessens visual stimulation. The writing flows beautifully into satisfying rhymes, rhyming is simple but this author seems to carefully choose the entire sentence, there are no mismatched words to stumble over, and the syllable count fits each line to the next like puzzle pieces. I know that sounds weird, I have OCD and wordcraft is something that sticks out to me – imagine singing a song and stumbling over a lyric because the syllable count is off by half a beat. Well, if you know, you know! This book has great flow, it’s satisfying to read, enough that I still thought about it after 10 years, and I’m sure that is soothing to a child as well!

Last but not least, it is a quick read. Great for that kid who always asks for one more story. You can easily drag it out or fly through it in under a minute if you wanted. All around just a great little book! My thanks to the author! 🙂

Reading at least one book to your child(ren) at bedtime is part of many bedtime routines. The Going to Bed book is short and gets your little one(s) in the mood. Boston will delight you, too!

My 14 month old loves this book! It’s been one of her favorites since she was even 6 months old. Adorable story, catchy.

This book is adorable. It’s easy and catchy with the rhymes. My toddler likes the repetition of “scrub scrub scrub” and “brisk brush brush”. Her favorite is “rock and rock and rock to sleep” and she rocks as she says it. I buy this for everyone I know who is having a baby because it’s such a quick little book. My daughter also loves the different animals, although there are a few that aren’t too obvious. As an adult, the book doesn’t make the most sense. Why would you take a bath and put pajamas on and then go exercise? But it’s fun because now my daughter says that’s so silly when they go up to exercise.

Does not have the whole story that ‘Good night, good night’ has

I almost always give books as baby shower gifts. Babies grow so quickly, it’s hard to guarantee your gift will ever fit, if you buy clothes, but a book, that gift will last a long time.
Books by Sandra Boynton are perfect. They are bright and colorful, fun for the parent to read, and kids love them. These board books are sturdy and will be appreciated for a long time.
This book is a good one to send the little one off to bed.
These books are good for babies, as they are bright, and toddlers.
