THE INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

Named a summer book to watch by The Washington Post, Boston Globe, USA Today, Oprah, Paste, Country Living, Good Housekeeping, and Nerd Daily

“Propulsive … a dizzying Gothic whodunit.”
—New York Times Book Review

Bestselling author Riley Sager returns with a Gothic chiller about a young caregiver assigned to work for a woman accused of a Lizzie Borden-like massacre decades earlier.

At seventeen, Lenora Hope
Hung her sister with a rope

Now reduced to a schoolyard chant, the Hope family murders shocked the Maine coast one bloody night in 1929. While most people assume seventeen-year-old Lenora was responsible, the police were never able to prove it. Other than her denial after the killings, she has never spoken publicly about that night, nor has she set foot outside Hope’s End, the cliffside mansion where the massacre occurred.

Stabbed her father with a knife
Took her mother’s happy life

It’s now 1983, and home-health aide Kit McDeere arrives at a decaying Hope’s End to care for Lenora after her previous nurse fled in the middle of the night. In her seventies and confined to a wheelchair, Lenora was rendered mute by a series of strokes and can only communicate with Kit by tapping out sentences on an old typewriter. One night, Lenora uses it to make a tantalizing offer—I want to tell you everything.

“It wasn’t me,” Lenora said
But she’s the only one not dead

As Kit helps Lenora write about the events leading to the Hope family massacre, it becomes clear there’s more to the tale than people know. But when new details about her predecessor’s departure come to light, Kit starts to suspect Lenora might not be telling the complete truth—and that the seemingly harmless woman in her care could be far more dangerous than she first thought.

  1. Shay Price

There are so many pages spent on repetition in the telling of the story. The plot twists were visible from miles away. The setting was maybe intended as gothic horror, but was really just not believable. I didn’t hate it so 3 stars. Recommend if stranded for weekend and nothing else on bookshelf.

  2. Lori L. Brown

Riley Sager never fails to astound me with his imaginative stories. This is another twisted suspense novel from a master of complex plots. Echoing the legend of Lizzie Borden, Sager takes us into a mansion teetering on ruin, and the life of a woman accused and acquitted of murdering her parents and sister–there’s even a school yard rhyme about her heinous deeds, much like Borden’s.

Lenora Hope is now aged and physically declining, confined to her bed, unable to talk or move, but for limited motion in her left hand. Kit McDeere, a caregiver with a blotch on her record, accepts the position of health aide for Lenora, but finds herself ensnared in the mystery of what really happened the night of the Hope murders in 1929. There are plenty of twists and turns, and the mansion–a house literally sliding into the sea–is a creepy character in itself. Another stellar winner fro Sager!

  3. Cynthia G. Allen

Well written… My attention was snagged in the first few pages.
A story that meanders through time seamlessly with no outlandish twists but smoothly transitioned revelations.

This is the 4th book of Riley Sagar I’ve read 📚 Another fabulous read. Keeping you in suspense the entire time. I almost never guess how his books will end.

  5. D Clark

This book……this book was a thrill ride. This the second Riley Sager book I read ( first, The House Across the Lake). The storyline and storytelling was great. Many twists and turns which kept my interest and curiosity going. Looking forward to ready more from this author. I actually rate a 4.5.

  6. Jody Marceaux

This book was unbelievable. Just when I thought I figured it out; bam, another plot twist. I’m giving it five stars because there were so many twists and turns. The Only One Left is one of the best mysteries I’ve read in a long time. Give it a try. If you like mysteries, you’re going to love this one.

  7. Amy43

Well this was quite the suspenseful mystery. You keep reading and reading because you can’t wait to get to the end! 4 stars instead of 5 because the ending was so freakin’ convoluted. Way too much was thrown at you in the end.

  8. Mae Clair

So many fascinating twists and turns. Loved it

  9. D Clark

This gothic mystery teeters between present and past and was unparalleled by any other I’ve read to date. If you know the story of Lizzie Borden who supposedly killed her family and all the mystery and questions still left decades later, and this intrigues you… THIS is the book for you! The historical premise is similar, a tragic murder mystery from decades past, a cast of well-drawn, elaborate personalities to get to know, and a wealth of twists that will literally leave you gasping as the story plays out. Throw in a dark and every mansion on the verge of collapse on a seaside cliff, and you’ve got mystery, danger, intrigue, and even some love story. I’d describe this one as a mix between the Lizzy Borden tale and the beloved game, CLUE. easily one of the best books I’ve ever read! 5 stars, hands-down.

  10. Pen Name

I really enjoyed this book. There are lots of twists and turns that really keep you guessing and throwing you off track. I really liked the ending too. Such a good read.

  11. An incredible discovery. These have changed how I can dress in Winter. Comfortable and extremely warm. An absolutely must have in a European winter!

This is a fabulous book that keeps you on your toes. Just as you think you’ve worked it out, there’s another twist in the tale. Highly recommended.

  12. Bloopers

The Only One Left by Riley Sager is described aptly by some as being like a corkscrew… Twist upon twist upon twist all spiraling downwards into an insane conclusion! What an emotional ride this was! Kit Mcdeere a caretaker for ailing elderly folks was the main character and narrator but for me the heart of the story is her patient Lenora Hope the paralyzed old woman , a Lizzie Borden-inspired character who is suspected of killing her entire family. She even has her own disturbing nursery rhyme that the school kids chant. I loved her character’s complexity and how it bordered on devious and sympathetic … Is she actually responsible for the murders and why has she chosen to finally spill her secrets to Kit after all these years? Overall I think this is one of Sager’s best (& most complex), masterfully crafted twists and turns. I was blown away at how all these puzzle pieces finally fit together!

  13. Hilly Barmby/Billie Hill

I loved this book ! I couldn’t wait to come home after work to keep on reading it. Just finished it and let me tell you, there is a LOT of plot twists. I did NOT see it coming.
