I, myself a manic reader, loved the story! The art work is stellar!!! It’s a great conversation piece. Gets kids talking about the issues in a story. I did not have to dumb it down, just went slowly, gave lots of time to look at the illustrations, watch the interactions between listeners before continuing.
Interestingly the parents!! were giving cues to “get on with it” already!! Get a clue people!!
These are little kids! If they’re engaged let it develop in their time! Or leave the room. Kids do notice tension, what have you, in a room!

I bought this book a few years ago because I saw it on a “best books for kids” list. I had never heard of it but it is one of our absolute favorites. The story and moral are top notch. The illustrations are absolutely beautiful. My kid loves to pick out and talk about all the different animals. It’s a keepsake for me.

First, I really like this book. I like that it has a message, and I like the rhyming verse. I also like that there’s an Easter egg of having the cricket, a red bug, a yellow bug, and a blue bug in every illustration. Well, almost every.
Whoever was responsible for making the board book version seemed to be unaware of the Easter egg. The board book version cuts off the yellow bug on one two-page spread. I spent a while carefully examining every square inch of that spread before giving up and concluding that it was missing. I eventually found a copy of the hardcover, non-board book version at the local library and compared, and that version does properly include all of the bugs: the yellow bug had the misfortune of being placed near the edge of the illustration, and my board book did not include it. I also have checked other copies of the board book at a local bookstore, and the yellow bug might be slightly visible in some of them (but not sufficiently to be clearly the yellow bug), so there is some variation in how the illustration was positioned and cut between copies.
(My only other complaint is that the cricket looks much more like a grasshopper.)
