This book is out of date and does not support audio files any longer, per Barons. But Amazon third sellers are still selling.
I purchased this book as a new book in August of 2023. My daughter noticed that it had already been used and some things were erased and some pages weren’t. It was returned. I placed another order for the book in January. At that time, there was absolutely no notice that there was a newer edition available. What this means is that the audio, downloadable portion of this book is no longer supported. I called Barons and they said this edition was discontinued in 2020. And yet, Amazon and their third party sellers continue to sell it, and at full price. Amazon finally has put the note that there is a newer version available, but waited 4 years to do so. I guess they had a huge stock of this edition to get rid of. This book is useless for the AP music theory test. Amazon needs to check their products better!

I never had the privilege of taking the AP Music Theory course in high school (I would’ve been the only one taking it), though I did manage to go on and get two degrees in music despite this handicap. I got this book because I like music theory (I am a composer) and I like to gather different perspectives on how fundamentals are approached. While this probably couldn’t be used as a primary teaching text, the author’s approach in dealing with common student stumbling blocks is quite novel at times. I’ve read many textbooks and there were things in this book that I hadn’t come across that are really quite useful. So, it’s well worth the price, whether you’re an actual AP student or just a theory junkie like me. My only complaint is the publishing quality–the cover and the pages all feel quite cheap. Clearly not a book built to last, which is a shame because it is such a useful resource.

Definitely helped me do well on the Exam. Only buy this if you have at least 3 months ahead of the test to truly get everything in that book. It takes time to go through, and it certainly isn’t something you can cram. I’ve crammed multiple things before, this is one thing that just isn’t doable. Moral of the story – don’t be like me and buy it a month early and barely have enough time to go though it. Buy it earlier than you think you’ll need it, go though it, and get a 5 on that test. 🙂

I’ve used this text to teach AP Music Theory for 3 years. It is an excellent resource!

And I thought it was just a theory. Not true! Music is real and this book writes all about it. Boy, does it ever! I learned the hard facts about figured bass, resolving chordal sevenths, and secondary dominants. I will never again wonder or theorize about such things. I have the facts!

I got this to look through before I started teaching out of it this year.
While I wish it had more examples/work for the student, but the material and knowledge base is great.
The added audio examples are a HUGE plus.

Bought this book for my high school student taking the AP Music Theory Exam. Even though the class in school technically taught the coursework to prepare students for the exam, my student felt unprepared. We read the reviews from others and bought this book. The student really felt like the book helped. And the practice tests were able to show him in which areas he’s strong and which areas need more focus/studying. Exam complete. We don’t know the score yet but we’re feeling pretty good!

  8. ZHAN

Maybe you guys already read my last review. the star based on its fact.

I found a plug-in to download all audios. The total is 180+ MP4’s, converted to MP3 is 688MB. The format is 44.1 kHz, 192kbps, stereo.

During the mixdown of those materials in Audition, I was shocked about its materials ~ almost 90% from 3rd Edition, they are slothful extremely ~ even not change the order of the audio list. Of crouse, there are so many overlap materials in Ed1 to Ed3.

But some were changed, for example, the question 22~27 of Ed3 Practice test 2, was changed to question 33~38 in Ed4, PT2. See the screenshot of them.

Does it worth buying 4th version with $10 more, compared with the 3rd edition of course with the easier/directly MP3 download? It is up to your wallet and your trust.

To be honest, I have to choose ONE star for this edition, for its impossible MP3 downloads, hackneyed and stereotyped expressions.

  9. Amazon Customer

Since the month of September I have used this textbook for my AP Music Theory students. However, I cannot access the aural tracks for the exercises in this book. Please Help!
