“Morning Pages have become a household name, a shorthand for unlocking your creative potential”—Vogue

Over four million copies sold!

Since its first publication, The Artist’s Way phenomena has inspired the genius of Elizabeth Gilbert and millions of readers to embark on a creative journey and find a deeper connection to process and purpose. Julia Cameron’s novel approach guides readers in uncovering problems areas and pressure points that may be restricting their creative flow and offers techniques to free up any areas where they might be stuck, opening up opportunities for self-growth and self-discovery.

The program begins with Cameron’s most vital tools for creative recovery – The Morning Pages, a daily writing ritual of three pages of stream-of-conscious, and The Artist Date, a dedicated block of time to nurture your inner artist. From there, she shares hundreds of exercises, activities, and prompts to help readers thoroughly explore each chapter. She also offers guidance on starting a “Creative Cluster” of fellow artists who will support you in your creative endeavors.

A revolutionary program for personal renewal, The Artist’s Way will help get you back on track, rediscover your passions, and take the steps you need to change your life.

13 reviews for The Artist’s Way: 30th Anniversary Edition

  1. Macy

My 6 friends and I just finished this book for our 12 week book club. Maybe the best and most effective book I’ve ever read. All about how to progress with your creative self. Very interactive, it has you doing tasks and challenges all throughout that are really fun. Makes you really look at yourself and get to the bottom of your creative blocks and struggles. If you are an artist or aspiring artist, this is a must read, I promise.

  2. David

I am naturally skeptical, and I don’t like to be a devotee of any movement, but this book will unblock your creativity if you do the exercises and let the changes happen. That’s all I’m going to say. If you’re reading this review, someone put this book on your radar. Do something good for yourself and try it out.

  3. Travel Mom

My friend who is newly exploring her artistic side after many years, loved this book and found it stimulating.

Truly! If you’re an artist or just want to rekindle your creativity; Maybe even begin to explore your creativity, this is the perfect book! Do not think twice. Just go for it!

Beautifully written & accessible layout. You definitely get out of it what you put in to it and it’s worth the effort.

I count wait for this book to arrive and when it did it did not disappoint. I started doing the work. It is a twelve week course. I have done a couple of weeks and ended up falling behind a week because I have been busy preparing for the wellness retreat at our resort, but I hope to get back at it soon. I like that you can work at your own pace. It is good to note that this course is not just for writers but for any creators whether it be music, painting or whatever else. The writing part of it is to help you find what your creative abilities are and then go from there. I feel gifted in my writing but am now looking at exploring 3D textured artwork. I just ordered some materials for that and am looking forward to delving into it. It’s exciting to explore and discover your inner creative self. You won’t be disappointed!

I’ve done it alone and with groups of different kinds of artists. It is amazing.

Are you feeling stuck — creatively? Then this is the book for you. I had heard so many recommendations about this book. At one point, it seemed like every podcast, speaker or article I read seemed to somehow refer back to this resource. So of course, I had to try it.

There’s a reason this book is in it’s 30th Anniversary edition – it works and inspires. Whether you’re any type of artist or just someone trying to re-ignite your creative thinking, I highly recommend you get this book. It helps you to approach and overcome any creative block you may have (be that writer’s block or otherwise). The book takes you through a variety of writing and reflection activities that get you thinking in different ways and are inspiring.

A book I will surely keep in our permanent collection and go back to re-read and re-do the exercises.

I was a little worried when I read that she was an alcoholic — the 12 step program has helped a lot of people, but it usually leaves a residual emphasis on a higher power.
And that is EVERYWHERE in this book.
She warns that you can substitute it for universe or whatever else you’d like. And I’ve been getting through the book and finding a lot of value in the exercises.

That being said, personally I recommend reading the end of each chapter and skimming the rest to get the exercises. Unless you’re ready for a spiritual version because, again, there’s a lot of God in this book.

Life changing, healing, adventurous, freeing and so much more. Read it and see the magic of your life unfold.

  12. ernesto arreguin

Teaches some really cool stuff to get the muck out of your head

  13. Teresa L. Williams

I first did a quick read through – what the author specifically tells you not to do! There were great tools and regular challenges suggested to permit opportunities for creative breakthrough and access to otherwise dormant processes. I’m now currently in the process of re-reading and following along the exercises and would suggest to anyone looking for a deeper creative perspective. At minimum, it’s worth a try!
