The #1 New York Times Bestseller

A decade-by-decade cookbook that highlights the best (and a few of the worst) baking recipes from the 20th century

Friends of baking, are you sick and tired of making the same recipes again and again? Then look no further than this baking blast from the past, as B. Dylan Hollis highlights the most unique tasty treats of yesteryear.

Travel back in time on a delicious decade-by-decade jaunt as Dylan shows you how to bake vintage forgotten greats. With a big pinch of fun and a full cup of humor, you’ll be baking everything from Chocolate Potato Cake from the 1910s to Avocado Pie from the 1960s.

Dylan has baked hundreds of recipes from countless antique cookbooks and selected only the best for this bakebook, sharing the shining stars from each decade. And because some of the recipes Dylan shares on his wildly popular social media channels are spectacular failures, he’s thrown in a few of the most disastrously strange recipes for you to try if you dare.

A few of Dylan’s favorites that are going to have you licking your lips and begging for more include:
● 1900s Cornflake Macaroons
● 1910s ANZAC Biscuits
● 1930s Peanut Butter Bread
● 1940s Chocolate Sauerkraut Cake
● 1950s Tomato Soup Cake
● 1970s Potato Chip Cookies

Baking Yesteryear contains 101 expertly curated recipes that will take you on a delicious journey through the past. With a larger-than-life personality and comedic puns galore, baking with Dylan never gets old. We’ll leave that to the recipes.

Fun writing and easy-to-follow recipes. The wacky cake is an immediate favorite, and I can’t wait to try more!

  2. Marvin williams

Hysterically funny, yet clearly explained, instructions. Far more detailed and helpful than the standard jumble of lingo in one’s average cookbook. Kudos to the photographers and designers; this is a gorgeous, classy book that would elevate any kitchen. Best when paired with 60’s kitchen tiles and an aesthetic appreciation of the curious, delicious, and peculiar.

  3. Chunky Monkey

    Beautifully done!

With recipes now available all over these interwebs, why would one want to get a cookbook? Well, this author has scoured and tested the recipes that some of us grew up with to find the ones that tickled his taste buds. If that were all, that would be enough. However, the pictures and commentary made this book a purchase that I am happy to say has pleased me more than finding a recipe online.

Some of the recipes were ones that I have been making for years and are in my well-worn index card box that my mom gave me when I moved-out after college 40+ years ago. I rifle through that box now and then because they are organized never. With this book, I can flag my favorites and have it right at hand. I like the permanence of books.

I grew up baking and cooking from pre ww2 and early post ww2 cooks books. This book is filled with those style recipes that warm my heart. Ive been looking for a collection of these style of recipies and at last here it is. I can’t wait to make the pork cake!

On to the actual book. It is well organized, informative in the first few pages for a novice baker. Great care was clearly taken with the descriptions and tips for each recipe. Narrated by the great personality that is B. Dylan Hollis. The pictures are stunning and give a great representation of what your baking should look like when finished. The ingredients used are simple and found either in your pantry already or readily available at most chain grocery stores.

Overall this book stands out agisnt others because of the simplicity of the recipes and the great flavors they produce!

This book was a small gift for my girlfriend. Let’s talk about it!
As a whole, you’ll find interesting recipes that you may have never heard of before, going from the early 1900s all the way up to the 80s. They’re even sectioned out by which era they came from! Beyond that there are 3 additional sections. “Dates” which is not a section of date-night-worthy baked goods, but instead focuses on recipes with, well, dates! Then there’s the no-bake section, fairly self explanatory, and a lovely section to peruse if you, like me, are a gibbering oaf in the kitchen. Lastly is “The Worst of the Worst.” Let’s be real here, grandma and grandpa came from a time where food felonies were abundant. As was Jello and mayonnaise. And these are portrayed with the idea that, yes, even the author of the book knows they will be terrible.

All of these recipes have a small, insightful blurb preceding them, in every single section, and they are well-written, witty, and very enjoyable to thumb through, even if you have zero plans to make a single thing from this book.

A great compilation of recipes from bygone days. I actually have had some of them baked by grandmothers in the past. Great photos, a fun read and each recipe I have made so far has been VERY well received. Highly recommend the book.
