I love when a suspense/thriller book builds like a roller coaster and really draws you in. I also love when you can’t automatically tell what’s going to happen right from the start (which is often why I stop reading thrillers). Hunted is one of those books that you have stick with – the beginning is a little slow, but once the action starts…watch out! It reminded me of a movie the way that it was written. Mukherjee does a great job with setting up the suspense.
The premise of the book is a parent’s nightmare from different perspectives, they are both missing their children and one suspected to have terrorist ties. They band together to find their kids and as we follow them and the FBI agent who is also on the hunt, we find out that things aren’t as they initially seemed…

Too many of the characters in the book had similar names and the story was hard to follow. Probably will not be buying anymore of these books and to say it is like “I am Pilgrim” is a totally inaccurate statement

I love reading. Once I get towards the end of the book, (where I have it figured out) it drags on. This book wasn’t like that. It should be on the NYT best seller list, IMO. Interesting the entire way through.

This was a suspenseful thriller. I liked the protagonist female FBI agent and enjoyed reading how she dealt with the issues of being a female agent of East Indian ancestry, and her reflections on how she herself was guilty of racial profiling at times. It’s good to see commentary about about how racism is woven into the fabric of American life–and I’m an old white guy. We do need reminding. I gave it only four stars because there were a bit too many coincidences and improbable events to the story. But I will check out his other books. I saw this in my library and picked it up out of curiosity. Oh–I also live in the vicinity of where the story takes place. I wish Mr. Mukherjee had described the trees in the Mt. Hood National Forest accurately: they are not pines; they are Douglas firs. Two dissimilar trees.

FBI Agent Shreya Mistry is on her last chance, her bluntness and willingness to cut corners making her a pariah in the service. But she knows she can find the group before it sets off more bombs. With the help of a new agent, Kramer, she sets off to track down the assassins.
She isn’t the only one looking for them. Parents of two of the group have come to the Oregon area to try to find their children before the police do. Sajid has come from England to find his daughter, Aliyah. She had told her parents she had a job teaching English in Japan but instead had come to America to join up with the group she had joined online. Carrie’s son, Greg, has returned from Iraq with the knowledge to build bombs and a leg that will never be right again after his military service. Carrie has come from Florida and joins Sajid as they are sure that there is a big mistake.
The head of the group is a woman, Miriam. She has collected a crew of those with grudges against the government and those willing to do whatever they are told. She is ex-military as well and perhaps her only goal is to influence the American Presidential election which is days away. Regardless, it is clear her group has plans to set off more bombs. Can they be found in time?
Abir Mukherjee has written a thriller that puts its foot on the gas in the first chapter and never takes it off. He is a British author best known before this book for a series of mysteries set in post-colonial India. In this book, he delves into the world of terrorists and their motivations and the love of parents for their children and their determination to always believe the best of them and do whatever it takes to save them. The disgraced FBI agent, Shreya, is an interesting character with an ability to put herself in the minds of her prey and make deductions that are a reach but often pay off. This book is recommended for thriller readers.

A chase thriller set primarily in Oregon.
When there’s a terrorist attack on an LA shopping mall, FBI Agent Shreya Mistry risks her life to get critical surveillance footage. She becomes obsessed with the crime and pursues it even though ordered to stop by her boss. A terrorist organization, “the Sons of the Caliphate,” claims credit, but Shreya suspects that the attack has more to do with US politics.
“Hunted” is an ambitious chase thriller – find the bombers before they strike again. It gets off to a rip-roaring start and then the pace slacks – only to picks up at the denouement. Part of the problem is that the point-of-view shifts from Shreya Mistry to Sajid Kahn (father of a would-be bomber) to Greg Flynn (a would-be bomber); Shreya is the most compelling voice.
Entertaining thriller with flaws.
