Detailed description:

A fascinating dive into the purpose and potential of dreams

Dreaming is one of the most deeply misunderstood functions of the human brain. Yet recent science reveals that our very survival as a species has depended on it. This Is Why You Dream explores the landscape of our subconscious, showing why humans have retained the ability to dream across millennia and how we can now harness its wondrous powers in both our sleeping and waking lives.

Dreaming fortifies our ability to regulate emotions. It processes and stores memories, amplifies creativity, and promotes learning. Dreams can even forecast future mental and physical ailments.

Dreams can also be put to use. Tracing recent cutting-edge dream research and brain science, dual-trained neuroscientist and neurosurgeon Dr. Rahul Jandialshows how to use lucid dreaming to practice real-life skills, how to rewrite nightmares, what our dreams reveal about our deepest desires, and how to monitor dreams for signs of Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s.

In the tradition of James Nestor’s Breath and Matthew Walker’s Why We Sleep, This Is Why You Dream opens the door to one of our oldest and most vital functions, and unlocks its potential to impact and radically improve our lives.

I’m always up for learning more about dreams. Dr Jandial does a great job explaining the intricacies of dreams. Our brains work in amazing ways. It’s not what you think it is

I thought I knew a lot about dreams — and then I read “This is Why You Dream.” Every chapter is mind-blowing. I had no idea kids have many more nightmares than adults, or that they are a normal part of development. I also didn’t know about the links between dreaming and health. Finally, I’ve always wanted to know more about lucid dreaming, especially how to lucid dream. This is Why You Dream explains, step-by-step, scientifically proven ways to become a lucid dreamer. Highly recommend this book!

  3. Patricia Finney

I enjoyed this book, especially the chapters about lucid dreaming which I’m trying to increase in my life. I am fascinated by the idea that when we die, we have a massive final dream.

I look forward to reading this book after seeing it discussed on an online (financial) site. I was in a Jungian dream study group for about 9 years when I lived in Florida, now about 30 years ago. Before that, when I was in Chicago, a writing/teaching method I learned emphasized dreams–telling them aloud, acting them out, etc. Then I eventually moved to Wisconsin and taught English and writing at a university for years, and used dream telling and writing. Even in essay/composition classes, I had my students tell and write dreams, especially near when an essay was due. I found that telling and writing the dream helps and teaches organization in a really organic way. And this was true for creative writing also. When we wake from a dream, it’s often jumbled remnants of what the dream was about. Telling and writing it, we have to organize it to make sense. I discovered that my students did somewhat to much better after doing dream work, and then starting their essays or short stories. Again, I look forward to the book!

I’ve always been interested in dreams and found this book to be very informational.

  6. Discerning Customer

I don’t usually read non-fiction, but this was riveting! I could not put it down and highly recommend it.

  7. Alex haddock

Got some interesting info on sleep chemistry. And lucid dreams.

  8. Heidi Ellen Arch

I bought the book after watching TV promos. I thought it would be more useful for dream interpretation but found out there was little new information.

  9. JArmadillo

The author is very knowledgeable and experienced, but the meaning of dreams is still elusive. I was not too impressed with what I learned. The recommended reading list is huge. A shorter list of the best books would have been more useful.

  10. Lyn

As someone who has multiple bad dreams/ nightmares a night this book made me extremely hopeful. As well as gave me a different outlook on what I used to consider bad luck, and now am seeing as a gift. So much of this made me feel less alone. And makes me feel less powerless as well. I had recently started meditating and I am stunned how trying to lucid dream is so closely related. Feeling confident I can master the outcome and storyline of my own dreams and no longer dread bedtime or naps. Such a good, well researched and insightful book. Highly recommend if you’re someone who dreams as much as I do.
